Would tinting the lenses also work?

Any translucent paint or the like would work.

If you brush model airplane paint inside, using a stiff brush, it can create a different effect as the light will pass through the thin areas created int he paint by the bristles.

Spraying a thin "mist-like" layer of paint from an aerosol can can be "adjusted" to your liking. One pass with a mist, test, add another pass of mist to thicken the layer, and again test to see if it's to your liking.

For temporary treatment one can also used colored cellophane sheets like the movie maker's lighting departments use similar materials as filters.

Lots of options.
