Water in the Winter!

Over our Winter / Christmas trip we reached 30 below and over the past 2 weeks 10 below. We had water the whole time!

We do have the Arctic packs which work well. But our nifty simple mod has made a big difference. The large tank of water doesn't freeze quickly but the amount of water in the water pump will if it gets gold enough outside.

First Modification - easy - I bought an indoor outdoor thermometer at Home Depot and popped the sensor in the water compartment. From inside we can see just how cold it's getting!

Next modification - bought a sheet of 3/4" thick Styrofoam at Lowes and cut to fit the inside of the water compartment. That made an amazing difference!

Planned modification is to move the water pump / filter arrangement slightly further away from the back wall so that another sheet of Styrofoam can be slid into place.

I used a hot glue gun (low melt will work) to put corner support pieces in place but really they stayed in place quite well without that bit of extra work.

In the past we have traveled with a small heater in the water compartment which did work well others have used a simple string of non -LED Christmas lights for that heat.

We had the water pump freeze during an unexpected cold snap a year ago in the mountains of Colorado but taking it apart and using the hair dryer fixed the problem.
