I am considering removing the centre piece under the bed but I can't make up my mind whether it has any useful purpose, I want to put our fold down bikes there, has anyone done this and if so did you have to put a brace in to strengthen or add support.

My *guess* is that it is there as a support of some kind. If you get rid of it, I'd consider a double-layer of plywood for the bed base.

I took mine out and I replaced it with a 2"x2" post at each end. The posts were a quarter inch shorter than the top of the wall. I then ran two pieces of angle iron from post to post. I drill and secured the angle to the posts. My bed is supported and I can put in larger items under the bed.

You could also just make it a fold down support that lays on the floor when you put the bikes in and then lift it back in position when you remove the bikes. It is no doubt there to support the center of the bed.
