My Sabre has the same light, in the same location - but it came from the factory that way. No clue about the wiring.
It does light up the steps well and the light doesn't really spread beyond that. It's a nice light.

I wish our XLR had a different set up. We have a bright yellow light that is behind the steps. When it is on, it makes it hard to actually see the steps because it is so bright. I am 5'2 and it glares right in my eyes as you step up onto the step.

Used a section of the led ribbon lights mounted at the top of the cutout and added a photoelectric eye that takes its power from the OEM step light. Removed the bulb from the OEM fixture and also added the ribbon lights on the underside of the awning to the photoelectric eye. Can turn it off from the inside OEM switch. I also got some 1" wide yellow reflective tape and put on the edge of each step. Works like a charm. Very visible with the lights from under the awning and in the step cutout. Now, if we are gone after dark, the lights come on automatically.
