Whirlpool Residential Refrigerator Mod

So one thing that really drove me nuts is that the Residential Fridge i upgraded to lacked a freezer shelf. Other then the little thing youll see over my ice trays. I contacted Forest River and Whirlpool. I thought FR forgot to ship it, and the Whirlpool confirmed the model i have and all units in my size range dont ship or have one. Whats funny is the freezer has molded shelf lips for such a thing.

Wife and i went to HD and bought the shortest section of 12 Inch wire shelf we could get and cut it to size. See photos. I will gladly make one for anyone for a small cost.

good idea nice job, many makers leave the shelf out so that an ice maker can be installed

Great Idea! I called and got the same response on the shelf. Why have the molded shelf mounts if you dont make a shelf!

Working on that this weekend

Rsudol, I left the trailer and forgot to measure the mounts. It is a few hundred miles away now. Do you remember the measurements of the shelf. I would rather get it ready here and bring back next time at trailer. Thanks

Thanks for the tip - will add shelf after next trip to HD or Lowes...

Does anyone have an idea for a door lock for this fridge?

When my Dometic 8.0 cu. ft. RV fridge wouldn't hold 40 in 90 weather I got this Whirlpool for $300 at a Sears Outlet, paired it with a $125 Harbor Freight 2000W inverter, added a 2nd 12V battery ($75) and called it a day....

My DW LOVES the extra space, especially being able to hold gallon jugs in the door - reducing trips to the store since we have (3) teen/pre-teen boys who never stop eating...

My install was stupid simple. I just ran a 2nd outlet from the inverter the back side of the fridge & manually move the plug from shore power to inverter power as needed. If campsite power is marginal I just leave it on the inverter which helps us to balance our load better.

By door lock, I suppose you mean to lock while traveling. I made a small gizmo that works well for us. I removed the cap between freezer and refrigerator door where the hinges are made to go on either side which exposes a screw hole that is sized as M6-1 (metric sized). I ordered from amazon the following to make.

I cut out a small thin piece of wood also and used some nuts to hold together to result in the following photo of how it works. Sorry, my trailer is in the shop right now for some warranty work, so this is all the photos I have. My wife wrapped the wood with some rubber type material to soften up enough to keep from scratching the doors. This design works great and the door is very secure and we simply unscrew when no longer needed and store in a drawer until needed next time. I put a nut on both sides of the wood a little loose to allow the wood to turn somewhat while you screw in the knob until secure. I added locktite to the knob to insure it does not unscrew from the all thread needed and cut off excess of the all thread that was ordered.

Ours came with a long bolt with rubber washers that is screwed into a hole drilled between the fridge and freezer doors.
