Another Tire Failure - Low Miles, 2 Years Old

She wasn't doing but about 5 mph when a loud pop occurred. Proper pressure had not been maintained and the tire had really been neglected. No doubt, it was a china bomb, and was only 2 years old with minimal miles on it. No damage was done to vehicle, and I was able to get her back up and running after a trip to Walmart.

Ok, sorry, couldn't resist. This was on my 5 year olds bike yesterday. There was a loud pop, and then her coming to me with tears in he eyes wanting me to fix it. All is well now.

I, for one, appreciate the humor in your post. I'm so tired of China Bomb posts.

Thank y'all for the comments. Made me laugh and started the day off good.

Brake lock up was a contributing factor no doubt.

I had that happen once when I was a kid. My grandpa had a huge air compressor in his garage and I decided to air up the back tire of my bike. I took off across the driveway and thought "boy that tire is riding awful hard" and then ca-pow! sounded like a shot gun. Scared the crap of me me. I sure miss those days.

That's funny. I've aired them up a little too much before. You know, little more, little more etc. blew one off the rim. Of course my kids, "what'd you do that for?"

It's good that you were able to repair the situation without too much down time, but did you replace the other tire? I sure would hate to be the guy stuck beside that death trap cause you know the other is a time bomb.

Well, shame on me but I didn't replace the steer tire. She's getting a new ride in august, so hoping front will last. Front one doesn't have the brake lock up issue like the other.

Hey do what ya gotta do but you better hope that thing doesn't let go near me!

You also need to check into why one is locking but not the other. Sounds like a brake is imbalanced, it will act like there's not a brake at all on the non locking wheel.

We'll keep it restricted to low speeds and inner RV park roads. No more highway usage for now.

Is this a garage kept bicycle, or does she park it outside? If outside, she may need to keep the tires on boards.

Does she check the pressures each time before using the bike? It sounds like you may want to invest in a good TPMS system.

I've seen both the bike and the operator. Definitely not over loaded. Either tire was defected or operator hit too many curbs. Lol

I suspect that the wheel was out of balance and there may have been an alignment issue. Are you certain the right axles were installed and that they were not flipped?

Once you are done with the repair, be certain the lugs are torqued correctly and then pump grease into the zerc fitting until clean grease comes out - I recommend using a pneumatic grease gun on the kill setting.

Once installed, inflate the tire to about 200# to be safe. Make sure the tire is not over loaded and that the rims are designed to work with them. I'm betting that tire was on a Huffy and I'm certain a Schwinn would never have that issue.

Finally, can you get your warranty to cover that? I hope the roadside assistance was up to par.

(I was still trying to figure out how to add a slide out, LED lighting, WDH and fridge references to the post when I realized how close it is to lunch time so I need to do some real work now.)

Man y'all are coming up with some great replies. Too funny, as we've all seen these exact words in various parts of the forum. Didn't think it would keep on going, but I'm still laughing.
