Momma bear, and what I thought were two cubs....

But when they ran away, it was actually FOUR cubs...

(Photos taken with a 600mm lens from quite a distance and when she and the cubs ran, I went in the opposite direction.)

And what I carry...and from experience, it does work!

That was in the Great Smoky Mountain NP in 2001. Back in the film days and I was actually hiking with a Nikon F5 and a Nikon F100 and a 600mm lens (can't do that now; too damn old). I actually hiked back to the car; not knowing who else was hanging around and all I had at that time was a worthless 9mm.

I talked to a ranger a few days later and she said there are two possibilities.
One, all four were her cubs; not unheard of, but not normal either. Or, some were adopted. I guess if a female bear dies another female at times will take over care of the cubs.

I was really shocked when she started to run off and two more cubs appeared out of no where, and I was wondering if there might be another female somewhere nearby I could not see.

and gators

pepper spray is just seasoning for them.

Now, don't get me wrong, a gator may just bite your arm/leg off and move on..... but even if it didn't kill you, I don't see how you can be stronger minus a limb.

I will disagree with experience. I have used counter assault once and UDAP once to ward off two different grizzles in Custer and Shoshone NF. Will it work all the time; maybe not. But it does work, and I'm hear with all my limbs to prove it!

There's a joke about using small bells and pepper spray to keep bears away.

If bears are actually around, you'll find piles of bear poop full of bells and smell like pepper spray.
