Lets see, three students from Camden, NJ public education sytem, according to the govenor, stated; “Last year only three students graduated from high school college-ready. Listen to that again. In the entire public school system in Camden last year, only three students graduated college ready." Also, NJ spends over $17,000 per pupil, making it one of the highest in the nation.

I seriously doubt the validity of this statement. Any H.S. grad is at least capable of going to community college, if not Ivy league. Pffffft. Don't believe everything you read....especially Christie sounding off...where did he get this absurd number? Did he test them himself? Grabbing headlines is all.

And, let's not delve down that road (state of education, Chris Christie or any other tangent that you may)- the OP was meant to be a humorous garb not a state of affairs.

A govenor is the chief exec of their respective state, that being the case, wouldn't it be logical that the govenor of a state, any state for that matter, would know more about that particular subject, than say, a casual observer. Seems like pointing out the serious flaws of one particular cities public school system, in this case, his state, is a start. JMHO

How 'bout we wind this one up.
All the juice is gone from this lemon, but I have to say I totally enjoyed the thread. I think back to the days when there were six grade levels going on at the same time, in the same room, with the same teacher, and kids knew a LOT more about how to make their way in the world and compare them to the product being turned out today; I get the pain.

However, rather than watch this thread progress on its path of "dynamic divergence" and get someone in trouble, what think we should close it.

What say ye?

I'm for closing it,but I would like to say that your reference to remembering back when ...needs to be tempered with the world kids of that period faced was/is a lot different than the world is today.

Perhaps.

"History does not repeat itself; but it often rhymes"
Samuel Clemens

Recalling what the children of that era faced (as far as stressors go), I think they might have had a future a lot bleaker than anything facing the kids today. Their "safety net" was a seat on the coal breakers at age 9 or thermonuclear incineration in their teens. Somehow they still managed to become "The Greatest Generation."

Not sure how well we have prepared our children to face the realities of a brutal uncaring world. Just my opinion of course; time will truly tell.

Hope this doesn't turn into a similar themed thread, but the kids of yesterday had a lot of things going for them than many of today's kids do - they had a mother waiting for them when they got home from school, they had a father who wasn't worried that his job might be sent overseas, they knew that if they wanted to work in a blue collar job, they could reasonably expect to do that and draw a pension, etc.

It's been said that there is no longer a job or occupation that a young person could enter into and expect to be able to spend their working life in and draw a defined pension.

Many more things that the kids of yesterday had (and didn't have) that todays kids don't have.

As the OP I agree the humorous side of this is done.

"they had a father who wasn't worried that his job might be sent overseas,"

They had a mother that worried night and day that their father would be shipped overseas to fight for their country though.

True - there's plenty pros and cons about the younger and older generations. I was just cherry picking.

As several members have already suggested, this joke has run the course, and needs to be closed.
