Mermaid Song

When I was a lad in a fishing town
An old man said to me
You can spend your life, your jolly life
Just sailin on the sea
You can search the world fer pretty girls
til your eyes grow weak and thin
But don’t go searching fer a mermaid, son
If you don’t know how to swim.

Chorus
Cause her hair is green as seaweed,
Her scale is blue and pale,
Her face, it was a work of art
I loved that girl with all my heart.
I only loved the upper part.
I did not like her tail.

So I signed on to a whaling ship.
The very first day at sea,
I saw a mermaid in the waves,
Reaching out to me.
‘Come live with me in the sea’ she said
‘Down on the ocean floor.
I’ll show you millions of wondrous things
That you never seen before’

So over I jumped and she pulled me down
Down to her seaweed bed
And a pillow made of tortoise shells
She placed beneath my head
She fed me shrimp and caviar
Upon a silver dish.
From her head to her waist, it was just my taste
But the rest of her was a fish

Cause her hair is green as seaweed,
Her scale is blue and pale,
Her face, it was a work of art
I loved that girl with all my heart.
I only loved the upper part.
I did not like her tail.

But then one day she swam away
I sang to the clams and whales
‘Oh , how I miss her seaweed hair
And the silver shine of her scales’
But then her sister, she swam by
And set my heart awhirl
Cause her upper part was an ugly fish
And her bottom part was a girl.

Yes, her hair was green as seaweed
Her scale was blue and pale
Her legs, they were a work of art
I loved that girl with all my heart.
I only loved the bottom part
Cause that’s where I get my t.....

They are a band from Newfoundland (my home province). They've done quite well. Popular in New England , of course, with a strong Irish influence.

The Mermaid song was one they got from a high school friend of mine. His grandfather passed it to him. It was a little ditty sung by fishermen in their kitchens on a Saturday night after a few libations of shine. Moonshine is still brewed in those parts of Newfoundland. Lou, you need to put Newfoundland on your list of places to visit. An experience unlike what you have ever experienced before, guaranteed.
