But how can you be sure the light goes out after you close the door?

The light comes on so my dogs will know what we are sharing at midnight.

If the light bulb is cold right after you open the door the next time, then the light was out during your absence.

My best advice is to take out a couple of the shelves and sit in the fridge and then close the door. Come back with your report.
