Ok.... so let's go with that... If you go 60 MPH for 1 minute, then stop.. how far did you go? answer = 1 mile.

SO if your track is 1 mile long, and on the first half mile you averaged 30mph.. that means it took you a minute to complete that first half. No matter how fast you go for the second half you cannot average 60mph for the whole track, because you used up your minute in the first half.

Correct.

It can't be done, regardless of length of track. This is an old problem I gave my 8th grade math class around 1878 or so.

Like the Cree Light Guy says "If you argue with math, you will lose......"

Course, I blew the coconut problem...so I have zero street cred.......

LOL

Speaking of "My Head exploded", I found this.

You can actually COUNT the freaking bananas in this photo:

Apples, bananas and coconuts - Ask Professor Puzzler

But your last line has 3 items to ADD, and the OP's had a multiplication sign in place of one of the adds.

Yes, that's a clearer photo than the one in the OP. But it's not the exact same problem. (there's no multiplication in the one you linked).

I still could not count the OP's bananas.

On the racetrack puzzler, now I see what's going on. It's clear that many of you discussing this appeared to have information that was simply not in the question. You knew the question from before or looked it up on the internet and didn't realize Herk phrased the question differently from it's original. He didn't say it was a mile long track but your explanations were figuring that in. No wonder.

Assume the track is REALLY long... 60 miles. To average 60 MPH you have to drive the whole track in one hour.

But you drove the first half, (30 miles) at 30MPH, so it took you an hour to drive that half. But you need to drive the entire track in one hour! You have no time left to finish the next 30 miles.

So 0 minutes!!
Can't be done like you say

No.. this is all from the information in the puzzle.

What's your answer? And how did you arrive at it without assuming some distance of the track. (even if you assume the track is n miles long, and use basic algebra to arrive at your answer, the conclusion will still be the same)

Everyone seems to be assuming that it will take the same time for each half. There is no set distance. There is no set time. There is a set relationship between the two and rate. The only thing we know about distance is that half is at one speed and half is at another. It doesn't matter what it is, just as long is it's half (.5). The rate of travel will also be a set number. We know two of these....30 for the first half, and 60 for the total. The time it takes to travel the two halves will be dependent on the rate of travel.

The rate for the first half plus the rate for the second half should be equal to 60.

30(.5) + X(.5) = 60

(30 + X ) X .5 = 60

30 + X = 60 / .5

30 + X = 120

X = 120 - 30

X = 90 mph

No. You can't add two rates to arrive at the average rate for the whole trip.

Good point...I was already recalculating....I don't think it can be done without a set distance.

It's doesn't matter what distance you make it. 1 mile, 60 miles, 6 billion miles, it can't be done.
