Winterizing at 1 AM (Bad Idea)
I posted this in the humor section so everyone can laugh at my stupidity.
We had a cold front come thru today and the temps are getting into the twenties in the morning hours. I made a mental note to winterize my trailer while at work today since I used it New Years Eve on a trip.
Well, I forgot about it when I got home but it occurred to me around 1 AM that I hadn't done it.
I ran outside to do it, with the intentions of doing it all fairly quick. Didn't even bother to put on a jacket, and as soon as I went out the door, the cold wind hit me hard. I told myself I needed to do it even quicker since the actual current temp is 30 degrees and falling.
First thing is I grabbed my socket and ratchet to pull the anode rod out and let the water heater drain................while I then went and opened the low point drains. This was my intentions.
In my hurry, I forgot to depressurize the water system before pulling the anode. Let me tell you now, that water is cold when it hits it you full force in the face. It'll definitely wake you up also.
Anyhow, after a hot shower I have stopped shivering.................but since I will be wide awake for awhile, I thought I would share the tale of my dumbness as a warning to others.

21 with a wind chill of 13 in Atlanta right now. I winterized my 5'er in November but I remember waiting until the last minute to winterize my boat before I sold it....but as the saying goes, "if it weren't for the last minute a lot if things wouldn't get done!"

On a positive note, at least the anode rod didn't hit you in the face nor were you hit with scalding hot water. You wouldn't believe how far an anode rod can travel if you're unscrewing the last couple of turns with your fingers. Forgetting to depressurize a water heater can be dangerous. That's a fact Jack!
Your actions weren't stupid, just forgetful, which is understandable at 1 AM.

As I was reading this I yelled at DH....oh crap!, we didn't turn on the fireplace in the RV last night!
(forgot....dealer/warranty dept. winterized it when we carried it over there 3 weeks ago)
WHEW!
(we live less than a mile from wmtire so we have the same temps)
It's supposed to get down to 19 degrees here Monday night!
I promise, wmtire, I laughed with ya, not at ya.

It seems the hurrieder I get, the longer it takes to get things done...
I don't envy you your experience one bit! Glad you didn't slip and fall, though.
11 degrees here right now and my bride has the flu or something, so I'm not even going outside today.

Wmtire,
I looked at the temps in your world and after careful studying and critical calculations imo I would have simply just turned the furnace on and left the wh running.
But nonetheless now we can poke and make phun of you for at least two days

For me it was the city water inlet. I had winterized the entire vehicle and at the last minute thought that I should "push the little valve" on the city water inlet to make sure that is was winterized too. Same result. Right in the face.

I'm kinda with Turbs...you should have just done a southern winterizing. The furnace (down to about 45 or so), and maybe a space heater pointed at pipes. I have a space heater pointed at my water filter in the front storage of my 5er, and one at the pipes in the rear kitchen. The holding tanks are of course heated as well.
Not sure what it got to there in LA, but it was supposed to get to the mid 20's here north of Houston. Brrrrr!

In the "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished" department; while snow blowing my neighbor's driveway (he left for work without clearing it), I ran over a extension cord from his Christmas lights he had run across his driveway.
Now my blower had a new set of shear pins so they stayed in place just long enough to pull the auger out of the end bearings...
Hope that is all that broke...
Most likely he will want me to buy him a new cord too...

temps
I would love 30 right now. In North Chili, NY (near Rochester) it is zero at 6pm and plummeting as I type.

WOW I know this cold snap has been rough eh. My hands got real cold at the office. We even had to turn the heater on.
I sometimes wish I could move back east.... Then winter comes.
Hope everyone is safe and warm wherever they are.
