I driven my vehicles through there more times than I can count. Given the stop signs, crosswalks and speed limit in the brightness square area, I still can't believe how much damage people manage to do to their rigs/trucks there. One of these days that bridge is going to give way when a train is crossing it.

There's a railroad bridge in Sherman, Texas with a low-hanging metal bar to "warn" high loads of the low bridge. About 2 years ago, a guy hit the railroad bridge with about the top 1/3 of his fifth wheel trailer... knocked it off the tow truck. The local TV station made a picture of the carnage and posted the pic on their website where it remained about 2 hours. Then the pic was gone - never to be seen there again. I sent the station an email asking where is the picture and what was the story. They never replied to the email. I guess someone (city, railroad, 5er puller) threatened legal action against the station.
[I could think of NO reason that 5er was on that particular street... unless someone's GPS chose 'shortest distance' without regard to obstacles. Still wouldn't think the GPS would route someone down that side street.]

While I understand that a lot of drivers are oblivious to their surroundings there are times when even the best get distracted. That being said , is there a mapping program that also lists minimum clearances?

There are websites that list low clearances. There are also Poi's for GPS. I prefer my garmin rv 760lmt that is programmable for my rv length, height and weight. That said, never entirely trust a GPS, phone or computer.

Interesting side note, That sign was hanging in the town I have lived in for 23 years. Griffin, Ga. There was an identical one hanging on the other side and it hung so low I saw a truck hit the sign and clear the bridge easily. It had been hit plenty over the years pulling it down some.
It was taken down when they rebuilt the bridge a couple of years ago and the sign now rests in our chamber of commerce museum.

I know that bridge is it the one by Duke? Been under it in my car, and always thought that If a person had a trailer there is no way to get around it you would have to back-up. Also there is warning only like a 1/2 block away. Very Dangerous overhang.....

Just before that low bridge in Durham is an intersection where one can turn either right or left. Turning right takes you to a ground level RR crossing to avoid the low bridge.

X2 also the Rand McNally trucker's atlas lists low clearance roadways if you want to carry a physical map.
