Happijak bed suggestions

The bottom bed/bench set up is not the greatest with destructive kids. What have you done to protect the benches from being destroyed? Any thing to reinforce them or protect them?

I'm thinking about a thin sheet of plywood over top the benches and then find some type of mattress to go over that. I am hoping to find something lite weight so that I can put it up on the top bunk when I need to use the bench set up. Doesn't happen often but still want the option.

One of the legs is loose and I need to figure out a way to tighten it back up. It's loose at the frame connection. Dealer is too far away to take it back for something small like that.

So basically any suggestions to protect yet still use them as bunk beds.

I actually used some 2x4's this past summer when my adult kids used the beds during our Yellowstone trip. The 2x4's a good job of stuffing up the happijack.

Afraid I don't have the pictures anymore...

Basically, just ran 2x4's along the perimeter(about 4ft long...), where the happijack is able to fold up into a bench. Then ran a couple of 2x4's the width of the happijack near the middle. This really "stiffened" up the happijack so there was no sagging.

It was pretty easy...

I've got some ideas but they will have to wait till spring when it's warm enough for me to go work on it. I have 5 kids and need this bed/seating to be stronger than what it is so no matter what I have to come up with something.

I can’t help with the bench reinforcement because I only have the bed, but I can suggest a great fold up queen mattress to go over the benches. I like to store stuff up on the bed in the lifted position and having a mattress that folds up means I don’t have to put stuff on a regular mattress. Very lightweight but EXTREMELY comfortable.
