Newb Questions
Hello all, my name is Shaun and I am doing some initial research for a trailer & truck combo. I'm going to settle on a trailer first, then concentrate on the tow vehicle. I'm looking at getting a 40ft Toy Hauler with a 17ft garage to haul my Jeep. I've got a dealer pricing out several trailers to my specs.
Anyone on here haul a Jeep like this? If so, what type of trailer do you have and what do you use for a tow vehicle?

Sounds like a lot of weight in the back of your rig. That will cause sway. Counter balance by putting your other gear in the front of the trailer. A 5th wheel will haul best. If you go with a non-5er, you'll want a serious weight distribution hitch with active sway control and a monster sway bar on the back of your (big) truck.

I'll definitely go with the 5th Wheel and big truck option. I'm just trying to determine what truck would best fit my needs. I'm thinking a 1-ton, probably dually...just not sure about make/model. Was hoping someone already running this type of configuration would chime in. Nonetheless, good advice on the counter-balance info.

Is the TH going to be a three axle?
One member here uses a Freightliner semi with a smart car on the back of it to pull a TH around for ?car shows?.
As I understand it he bought the truck and car for less than what I paid for my 250 new.

A 5th toy hauler would be your best bet for sure and for a truck I would lean toward a bigger dually such as a f-450 or the heavy duty dodge, not sure if Chevy makes anything that is that big.

Holy crap, those are some beefy trucks right there. I'd prefer something a little smaller; it's going to be a daily driver too.

Yes they are and most have a "BEEFY" price tag on them.
If you shop around a good 450 or 4500 can be found but man the price.. 
A semi size rig may be a touch cheaper and some people do drive them "daily"...........

I have a 42' fifth wheel (bunkhouse) with a 16,000 GVWR- and we run right about that (just over the last time I checked). So, a little bit lighter than you're looking at.
We're pulling it with a 2012 Ram 3500 Dually 4x4. It is also my wife and my's daily driver as we are full-timers. My camper is fairly light on tongue weight (about 2,800-3,000 pounds). Given my family's weights and the stuff that we carry in the truck- I'm pretty sure that we're running just overloaded on the truck also (GVWR on the truck is 12,300).
IMO, you should be fine with a 2013 and newer 350/3500 dually. I wouldn't mind going up in size on the truck, but I don't want to lose my 4x4 or get a new house payment (not that my 3500 was all that cheap).

I am a ford guy so I know more on them then the other brand. But there isn't much of a price difference between a f350 and a f450. The f450 has a wider front axle but has a sharper turning radius. The f450 does come a little lowered geared so fuel mileage will be a little lower. As far as daily drive both can be a pain in some places due to length and width, I drove my f350 as a daily drive for a couple of years until I got a little beater car.

Just remember the price was mentioned and for the truck and car it was a few K cheaper than the 250.

I've been looking at Ford F350's and Ram 3500's. They both seem to be capable of hauling what I need as long as it's geared, etc. properly. I'm figuring I need a tow capacity of around 20k.

We've had a previous TT, 5th wheels and now a motorhome. Over the years I come to find RVing is about making concessions. Sometimes you just can't take everything. The truck you plan on using as an "everyday" vehicle and to tow with, do you need it the places you are going or are you just using the Jeep? We have a motorhome and tow a Jeep behind. Easy towing. I believe I've read all the posts but I haven't seen why you need both vehicles, not that it's a big deal, just sounds like a towing hassle. Good Luck.

Really, an RV is completely fine it just comes down to preference. Although, as I continue to read, an RV may be the better choice. Will take some time to reevaluate and chat with my wife.
