Portable Winch Recommendation

Hi All... Any recommendations on a decent portable 12V winch to load and especially off-load a couple 900 pound Harley's? Need to have forward, reverse and braking ability when stopped. Plan to attach it to a front floor ring for winching bikes in/out. No problem riding the bike up the ramp, BUT...backing them down the ramp is another thing -- sliding backwards for 8-10 feet was a bit hairy... Thanks in advanced...

Just a thought from my experience. First time I backed mine out, I used the front brake. It didn't work so well. Next time I left it in gear and used the clutch instead. Worked like a charm. Absolutely 1000% better.

I just bought this to load and unload my FW hitch, power in and out with a wireless remote.

Just a touch over $50 with tax when on sale.

I have not had a chance to use it yet but it looks like a good unit for the price.

Something to think about. Even though the Harley is low, you may need some momentum to make that transition from the ramp to the ground. A second person can really help.

Mine is taller, and although I am use to the drill, it still gets the heart beating. My feet are a good 6"+ off the ground when the bike goes from the ramp to the ground.

Bought the same winch to load my Vstrom, but I use the clutch method, walking next to the bike, to unload.

As ChipBruce advised. With the engine off, put the bike in gear and use the clutch to control your speed down the ramp. That's how I have been doing it.

A couple of questions if I may.

Did you wire to the battery for power or?

Any idea how many amps it pulls under a load?

The manual says it pulls around 50 or so amps under a full load.

This is what I was planning on but I was not sure if would overload the circuit.

Hitch is only about 100-150 pounds but it would be a dead weight lift not rolling.

I use on my ramps plates that have protruding holes that pop up for traction. Sommer for bikes and winter so as not to slip on a ice ramp. Here is a link just to see what works for me. Line them up screw them down and stay on them on the way down. Lots of bite. Go slow.

I use the 2500lb harbor freight remote control ATV winch to pull 500 lb bikes up and down 8ft ramps into the bed of my f150. The winch and a wheel chock are bolted to the bed. I walk on a ramp next to the bike while my wife runs the remote button.

Plenty of reserve power. The bikes are lighter but the ramps are probably steeper than your application.
