Family survives freak lightning accident at camping ground

A family is recovering after lightning struck a tree at a camping ground in northern New South Wales.

Lightning struck the tree early this morning at the Stuarts Point caravan park north of Kempsey, breaking off a branch, which crashed onto a campervan.

Greg Gill from Kempsey SES says the lightning then travelled underground and came up inside a tent where two adults and two children were sleeping.

While the children escaped injury, the adults did not.

"They were actually burnt on the arms and legs from the lightning, it actually burnt their bodies," he said.

The children and father have been released today from hospital while the mother is still under observation.

Mr Gill says everyone involved had a lucky escape.

"It's amazing isn't it? That no one was actually killed."

Spooky... I've tented w/ family in some fairly major thunderstorms (as I'm sure have many others).
