KIDDE Fire Extinguisher RECALL 1973 to 2017

PLEASE READ and see attachment below.

KIDDE FIRE EXTINGUISHER RECALL

"Some of you might have seen information on the news about a recall of certain models of Kidde Fire Extinguishers. The following information is taken from the Consumer Products Safety Commission website:
"This recall involves two styles of Kidde fire extinguishers: plastic handle fire extinguishers and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers.
... "Plastic handle fire extinguishers: The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated.
"The model number is printed on the fire extinguisher label. For units produced in 2007 and beyond, the date of manufacture is a 10-digit date code printed on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom. Digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format. Date codes for recalled models manufactured from January 2, 2012 through August 15, 2017 are 00212 through 22717. For units produced before 2007, a date code is not printed on the fire extinguisher."
.
If you have one or more fire extinguishers covered by the recall, DO NOT CONTACT FOREST RIVER for a replacement, instead, go to the Kidde website at www.kidde.com, or call the company at

I state in the other thread concerning the fire extinguisher that I did have a fire in my last trailer. Fortunately the extinguisher in the trailer worked and I was able to put out the fire. I expected the extinguisher to work and never questioned it would not.
My question now is, how did Kidde go so long with a defective product? Was it that most of us never use our extinguishers? What about Underwriters Laboratory? I always trusted this label and now I have less trust since each of these bad extinguishers have the UI label.
I filled out the form to replace my recalled extinguish but I cannot trust the new one. I will be replacing it with another manufacturer's product. I was lucky once and the fire did little damage but if the fire extinguisher did not work I would have lost my trailer and all its contents.

I also have an E10(E10H) and I could not find it on their web site. I called them and they said the E10 was not on the recall list. It looks just like my other 3(only E10 is larger) that are on the recall.
The model E-10 is not on the United States recall list but is on the Canada list. I spoke with the United States recall center today who informed me the date code 25313 (253rd day of 2013) is not within the E10 manufactured recall date range. Not sure I like their answer. I did notice the nozzle is black on my four which are on the recall list while the E10 has a white nozzle.

I am curious if FR buys these in bulk and every unit uses a Kidde? I used my 2 year old extinguisher in August and it worked as it should and I think it was a Kidde but not certain. Replaced with a First Alert because that was available on Amazon and a friend in the extinguisher business told me several years ago to stay away from Kidde because they are cheaply made. Everything on the new one is metal except for the handle.

Periodically like once a year they should be checked to make sure the nozzle is not blocked and up and down to make sure the extinguishing agent is not caked up.

I called the recall number provided and they suggested I call the Kidde Customer Service number: 1-800-631-7377.
I spoke to them and she asked me for the date on my extinguisher. For me I did not have a stamped date but raised 2 digits on the bottom of the extinguisher.
Mine was not on the recall. But she did say if the date was within the range(from looking at your post of effected dates and your date, it would appear yours is.) they would send you a comparable replacement.
I would suggest you try Kidde Customer Service at the number I listed.

Magic!

Thank you very much for your Customer Service suggestion and phone number. They answered on the second ring, took my information, verified it is covered by the recall and placed the order for me. Sure makes a difference who you call and speak with.

Yes, the are separate companies. I have three First Alerts and one Kidde. Kidde is mailing a replacement. First Alert had a recall back about 2000 on their FE1A10G models.

Talking

I was going out to look at mine and the DW ask where I was going. I replied, "I'm going to look at my Kiddie." She responded, "The cat is in the house already." I wonder what she will say when I tell her the Kiddie has been recalled. Or should I tell her a new Kiddie is on the way?

Be sure to check you fire extinguisher

Post merged to this thread by site team

This may have been mentioned in other sections on the forum, not sure, so not meaning to post again, but haven't seen it here in the pop up section yet. Many of you may have heard on the news Kidde announced a recall dating back to 1973 on many fire extinguishers. I checked mine in my pop up and sure enough, it was on the list. Filled out the form and a new one is on the way. You always hope you will never need it, but you want it to work if you ever do.

Here's a link to there website for the recall.

What instructions did you receive for disposing of the recalled extinguishers?

None! Just a new extinguisher in a box with an almost useless operating instruction sheet.
Perhaps I will get more info with one of the other two they should send me.

Remember that the reason they are being recalled is the handle could blow off, injure or kill you, when you try to discharge them. I would not attempt to discharge the old ones or use them to "practice" with. Very strange that the replacements do not come with disposal instructions.

My bad! There was a return instruction sheet under all the popcorn. All instructions and a return label.

Two on recall

Just checked two I purchased from Home Depot in 2015, both came in a package as a pair, are on the recall list. Contacted KIDDIE, two new ones being shipped.
