RV Clubs Worth It?

Hello all,

We are not new to RVing, but will be traveling some this time around and we were wondering if any of the RV Clubs, Good Sam's, Passport America, or any others, were really worth it. We aren't looking for fancy campgrounds with pools, or golf nearby, as we have a toy-hauler, and will be taking our street bikes to places so we can ride, and have a bed when we return. I have found several free sites to be able to find campgrounds, but can't seem to find a site that shows the RV club discounts. We've got 4 or 5 long week-end trips planned next year, and were just wondering if the membership may pay for itself. Thanks for all your help.

While I don't belong to one because we mostly camp at government parks, I'd suggest Good Sams and Passport America. They seem to be more universally accepted.

We started out with Coast To Coast 12 years ago. We've been Good Sam members for year. Much later did add Passport America. Those seemed to work for us. We just dropped C to C because as fulltimers, we moved on to a bigger membership park system [Thousand Trails,NACO, ROD] as we find ourselves wanting to spend more time in the different areas. Diana

You have to look at what they offer to see if it fits your purpose. We as well belong to Thousand Trails, a very large organization. They offer many types of memberships and in different parts of the country or over the entire U.S. With Thousand Trials you have an inishel buy in (one time) then once a year you pay a maintenance fee, depending on your plan will determine how much the maintenance fee is. One can go on line and buy an existing membership from someone that whats to sell there at a lower rate. We have been a member for about 7 years now and pretty happy with it. The way we look at it, for the amount we pay for our maintenance fee, we have to camp at Thousand Trails 15 days to break even and that is based on an average site rental that we normally stay at, and there is no extra cost for miniature golf, the pool the hot tub the tennis courts, etc, etc, etc. No out of pocket for admenities. Hi, we have Good Sam for the 10% discount and we had Passport America but found that unless you do alot of camping during the week and not the weekends or any Holiday weekends it's not much good. We camp mostly on long weekends at in the home area and go south for 3 or 4 months in the winter. T. Trails is nice, we don't belong but we know many that do and all that in and out for a few days or even weeks is not what we wanted. We stay put in one campground for the entire winter and travel by car.
It's all pretty much up to what you like to do. Enjoy and Good Luck

We belong to good SAm's and our state parks. We also belong to a few private cubs that get discounts when we camp in a group. Hard to kown what to belong to. i hear pro's and con's of joinnng a club.

We joined Passport just prior to a long trip. The savings paid for the cost of the membership and then a little. And it was nice to know some about the parks we stayed at. However, we did let it lapse because like was mentioned above, it only really works if you camp during the week. We also belong to Good Sam, but we haven't let that really decide where we camp.

Passport America worked for us this past year because we found the campgrounds we wanted to stay at on our trip to NY state belonged. So we made out, otherwise I don't think we will renew this year. Also belong to Good Sam as we like some of their perks. Have their road service and like the Trailer Life Directory(discount to members).
