Delayed build due to summer shut down.

We got the bad news today. What should have been a six week build will now be pushed back to eight or more weeks due to the summer shut down at the plant.
We have a trip planned with the old beast for mid July so it looks as though the new Surveyor will not be picked up until late July. 😳
This is disappointing news to say the least. But, we have no control over it. We will have to make some reservations for Fall trips.

I ask because I find it some what unusual.

I don't think it's too uncommon for factories to have shut downs for a week or two... At least not around here.

True - several companies shut down for a time in the summer and winter. Saves a lot of production disruption by shutting the entire plant down.

Ah, I know the Kit MFG that once made travel trailers and Mobil homes not far from my work was year around unless winter weather caused a back log for shipping them out.

The glass factories around here used to have planned shutdowns. They gave employees the time off and used the time for maintenance of the lines.
It's just bad timing for us.

The plants are typically shut down the week of July 4 and the week of Christmas to give an opportunity for family time.

Maintenance and inventory. Inventory required by law so most companies do maintenance at this time also. I worked for Timken 38 years and the week of the 4th of July is shutdown every year.

Years ago my father was a tool and die maker for Craftsman (yes long before Sears shipped it overseas) and they always had a week shutdown mid summer. Dog days in mid August.

Going squirrel here. Indulge an old sappy memory. In Hs machine shop I had to kill a hammer head. Brought it home to show my dad. He brought it to work and had it triple chromed. Brought it back to school and the shop teacher failed me. Besides a few choice words and a visit to the principles office I got it reversed. OK so now how many of you still have items you made in school 37 years later.

I have four things.
Two lead anvils molded (sand cast) in metal shop and two 12v power supplies made in electrical shop, I was a freshman in high school 40 plus years ago.

I still have a screw driver from metals class and up to 1999 Haysville tornado my Mom had a set of cherry end tables i built in wood shop.Graduated in 1968.

I have just about all the tools I originally bought. I have my first sets of Husky sockets in my 5er, all my technician tools though i did replace the case in the early 80's, still have my Beckman DVOM and a Telequipment scope. I have all my dads tools when he was a maintenance mechanic/millwright, he drove to Chicago in 1947 to buy Craftsman gun metal finish sockets and wrenches, sizes to 1 1/2. I have way too many tools actually..

I have a set of punches, a hammer, a threaded plate with matching bolt and a set of "vee" blocks I made in machine shop.
And yes, way too many tools.

Closed for Amish hay season.

Here in Missouri there are a few schools in the southern part of the state that close down for a week when deer hunting season starts. It was easier to close the schools for a week than have the parking lots full of trucks with dead deer in them most of the day.... day after day, until the season was over. Not a pretty sight to most, but a necessity for many.
