Generator/Inverter Help!

Brand new 2016 233S Rockwood Roo...here is the kicker, we went with the 15K btu AC.


What size generator or inverter do I need? Yes, ideally it is likely we run the AC from time to time - summer in "misery" (Missouri) can be brutal!!

Some say a 3000 watt will handle it, some say it won't. I ordered a 13.5K AC unit on our new TT for fear my generator couldn't handle it.

I'm sure you'll hear some of the same, if I didn't already have the gen, I would have gotten the bigger AC. Maybe a couple 2000 in parallel would be the best way to go for you....

That's the rub with a bigger AC, that extra 10% of cooling capacity is going to need more current/voltage. My Honda 3000i will do the 13.5K Btu but I can tell there isn't a lot of reserve capacity left. Don't want to risk either the AC or genset

You may get away with a single 3k but there might not be enough cap left to run other things while the AC is on. A couple 2k in parallel may serve you better.

When in doubt... find the amperage of the AC X voltage (hopefully you can get 120) X power factor (starting surge). It will be at least 1.5 -2 = starting wattage. Even if brief, ie. the Honda has an overload indicator. The shorter the time that is on the better and that in itself should send a red flag up in your head that your pressing your luck.
Understand that all generator mfr. model numbers reflect maximum output not rated or sustained output. That is the true usable output

you're asking two different things. you have inverters and then you have inverter generators.

there's no way you can run the a/c in a Roo, with an inverter. unless you have a massive battery bank in the back of your truck. and you'll still need a way to recharge the battery bank as that a/c will deplete them after a few hours.

if you go with an INVERTER generator, you'll need at least a 3000w one.
with the 15k a/c, you might want to look at a couple of paralleled Honda or Yamaha 2000w units.
then you only need one if you won't need the a/c.

I just today picked up a honda eu3000is invertor generator. It's nice! But the box says that the 3000 is not large enough to run a 15K but ac. The pic is of the box the genny came in.

Add a hard start capacitor and might be ok.

Thanks everyone!! Back to crunching numbers! Most likely parallel's are they way to go. Perhaps moving some place cooler would be cheaper!!

Advantages of 2 in parallel is that when weather is cool you can get by with only one. Also they are much easier to move around.

I have two Hondas 2000 and I ran my 15k A/C with (by mistake) my microwave. No problems.

X2 for everyone saying 2x2000 is a good way to go. Another way to think about it is that the dual 2000's are just about like plugging into a 30amp campground pole. (3400 watts continuous for my parallel Champions divided by 120 volts is 28.3 amps).
