uvw vs gvw

I have a 2003 Salem 19ex hybrid the Uvw is 3950 and the Gvw is 7180 that means I have a carry capacity of 3230 . I will never have that much cargo in the hybrid. My question is I am in the process of selling it and a person is coming to look at it , they have a TV that will tow 5000 pounds , that would be the UVW plus a 1000 lbs of cargo . I have explained the weights to the person and they seem fine with it but I do not know if in good conscience sell it to him, any thoughts?

Good for you for being concerned about that! Most RV dealers wouldn't care.

If their TV is rated to tow 5000# you should discuss the issue of payload with them. That will be more critical than the tow rating. There are some members here who tow with small diesel SUVs (VW or Mercedes Benz) that are very capable tow vehicles. A Honda Ridgeline truck with a 5000# tow rating will be less capable of heavy payloads.

If its a family with kids I'd be more reluctant to sell it to them than an empty-nester couple but they still might want to take grand kids for a camping trip.

Everybody is going to have a different comfort level when towing an RV. I towed our previous Roo 23SS (5200# loaded) with a Toyota Tacoma TRD rated at 6500# and I wasn't comfortable so I upgraded to a F-150.

Bottom line... If your conscience is telling you it won't be safe for them, don't put yourself in a situation where you lose sleep worrying about whether or not you did the right thing.

well I sold it I explained everything to them but they said their dealer said they could tow more with a weight distribution hitch. I guess the only think I could do was refuse to sell to them , but as meatloaf would say I would do anything , but I won't do that .

It's up to the person that will be towing it to figure it out and educate themselves on those issues.....you went over it with them and at the end of the day they did what they thought was the right for them...that's all you can do, you went way beyond what the vast majority would have done.
