Bergstrom AFB - you were there when they closed it?
Then to Elmendorf AFB - quite a change in scenery.

How Many Vets
Hello, Fellow Vets/Retirees, Nice to see this sub-forum. I have been hanging out in the "plumbing" sub-forum. You can check this thread out to get a handle on my latest adventures. http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...nk-109776.html
I am a Navy retiree with an unusual career. Started out as a surface line officer (ship driver). After two ships (DD & APB), both Vietnam deployed ('67 Gulf of Tonkin, 68-69 MRF Mekong River) and two training shore stations, got my MS in psychology and became a Navy Psychologist. Finished with 11 yrs active and 19 reserve, three with 4th MARDIV. Retired '96. Last August I attended the MRFA bi-annual convention/reunion and was very glad to see some old shipmates and embarked 9th INF Division troops. If anyone out there can relate to any of this, give me a shout out. Cheers to all. Orlando, Florida is my home base!

When and where were you in PMEL? I was active duty at Lowry 1972-1973 for tech school and at the lab at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque from 1973-1979.
I also worked civil service at the labs at Elmendorf AFB 1986-2002 and Selfridge ANGB near Detroit 2002-2014.

How Many Vets On Here
"Not quite sure of what you're saying here,I never did understand Navy terms ( especially rank and insignia)"
I know; military terns are like foreign languages, and each service has its own "dialects". You might ask, "Why don't they put out a dictionary of terms and abbreviations?" Well, the Navy did/does. But you have to know the title to find it: DICNAVAB. Seriously, that is the title of the Dictionary of Naval Abbreviations. For my entry on this sub-forum, here is the "translation":
Surface warfare: serves on surface ships as opposed to piloting airplanes or serving in submarines
DD: Destroyer, the smaller of combatants, as opposed to cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers. Known affectionately as the "Tin Can Navy"
APB: Self propelled barracks ship, an auxiliary combatant used in Vietnam as the mother ships for Army infantry and Navy assault boats that operated in the Mekong delta
MRF: Mobile Riverine Force, the joint Navy/Army unit that fought in the Mekng Delta
MRFA: Mobile Riverine Force Association: A really neat and well run veteran's organization for MRF veterans (see The Mobile Riverine Force Association - MRFA)
MS: Master of Science degree
MARDIV: Marine Division: the 4th Marine Division is, essentially the USMC Reserves
Hope this helps---Herschel Hughes, Jr., CDR, MSC, USNR (Ret.)
oops, there I go again:
CDR: Commander (equivalent to Lt. Col.)
MSC: Medical Service Corps (all commissioned medical professionals other than doctors, dentists, and nurses)
USNR: You got that figured out, right?

Thank You Sir for that info. I'm sure all of the military branches have their own similar documents.
CDR - An O-5 in all branches. Commander just sounds more powerful (to me anyways) than a Lt.Col.
As far as rank and insignia, I guess officers rank is displayed on their lower sleeve ( as least on their dress uniform), but the various bands seem to run in together for the upper ranks. How do you differentiate between them?
Enlisted - I never understood the term "Petty" as in Petty Officer. To me "Petty" means something small or insignificant (A small amount of cash (Petty cash) or a minor crime (Petty crime),but in the Navy I believe a Petty Officer is a high ranking enlisted grade.
Just talking here, but thanks for your reply.
