K9

I have only recently begun talking about my 1969 service. I was in K9, which is why I use the handle DogDude. I have been seeing things about current K9 usage in Iraq and Afghanistan and am very interested in what I am seeing. We are going to the International Rally. Are any of you current or ex-military K9's that are also going to the rally? If so, I would love to talk with you and compare notes.

And just how-in-hell do you get a dog to calmly jump from a plane with you? It was had enough to get them to jump from a low-hovering chopper!

I was a sentry dog handler in Vietnam in 1967-1968. One of my fellow sentry dog handlers lives in Morgantown, WV.

Sorry for the delay

If you were at Goshen, I wish we had gotten together. I want to compare a lot of things. I see some media from Iraq and Afghanistan showing things we just couldn't do.

I went to Sentry Dogs and then to Patrol Dog School in 1969. It was a volunteer position and we were told at the time that this was a new program. What they didn't tell us is that we would go to Recon and Recovery in country. It was a short-lived program, ending a couple of years later.

We had the best trained K9's at the time, but what I see now indicates that it's the current norm. We did not use back theory and I wonder if the military uses it now. I use it with my own dogs and it's much easier and much better than the old military methods.

Maybe we can meet up at another FROG event.
