Mil Fam Camps

I have read on the Forum that the FamCamps are not always financially worth the stay or a bargain.
DW, DD and I are thinking about a long trip thru the Texas Blue Bonnet trail then on to Salt Lake City and return (reluctantly) to north Louisiana.
Are there any vets around that can give their thoughts on the FamCamps where you have stayed. We probably will not stay more than three notes at any one particular site.

We have stayed at four military campgrounds and all four seemed great to us. We stay at one in Ft Fisher military campground a lot. The military campgrounds are very reasonable in price, we use our bathroom a so I donít know about much else. Matter of fact all we normally use at a campground is water, electric and sewer.

Sometimes they are a better bargain, sometimes they are not. Lackland for example was very inexpensive as far as cost, but the sites were so-so. Definitely nothing to write home to Mom about. Plus to get to the campground was a real pain. Unless it has changed, you have to go towards what used to be Kelly AFB, then back around the flightline, through the little valley by the golf course, and in the back way just to get to the sites. Once there, it was clean enough, but the fire ants reigned supreme. And wasps of all kinds. I understand (being from here) that those are difficult at best to control, but just reporting it.

The damned fire ants are ferocious in South Texas. When stationed at Lackland many years ago, I was driving home at night and lost a muffler. Crawled underneath to wire it up and laid in a fire ant hill. That one resulted in a trip to the hospital!

In the summer I can be outside and step on a fire ant mound and Iím so tall that before my brain can tell me itís fire ants Iím ate up. Fire ants donít really bother me as I have been stung by honeybees thousands of times

Destin FAMCAMP and base camground at Pcola were very nice. Not overly impressed with Tyndall (before the hurricaine). Base campground at Panama City is only good for small rigs. CWO4 Retired Navy
