My experience is.. NOT ALL require the DOD affiliation. Some (Ft McCoy, WI for example.) will allow the public in. Just need to check with the specific location.

(speaking of WI, another herd of hidden gems are the county parks! some AWESOME ones there and far better than the state parks imo!

Stayed at many, from AK to FL and between. Many take resverations, and the Navy has a good web site to make resverations at their famcamps.

There's Round Pond campground just a few minutes away from West Point. I don't know if it's for active/retired military but I did use the dump station when the one on post was broken. The climb up the hill can be tough but the place is absolutely beautiful in the fall. It's a great base camp to catch a football game.

Most allow DOD Civlian worker erst, 100% disabled Vet. Most are requiring a DOD ACCESS CARD which can be issued to 100% disabled, ect. I have an appointment the end of the month, with local Air National Guard unit to get my wife, and I access cards. If your mom is still living , might want to call about getting her a Access card, not sure about adult childern, eligibility

In response to Kevin and Judy you either have to be active, retired military with ID card or sponsored by someone who is and the have to be wit you. We are retired and are sponsoring my son and family at Pelican Point family camp on Cherrypoint Marine Base. Next, we have only used a few military campgrounds so far. Ft. Monroe, VA (now run by civilians), Cherry Point,NC, Little Rock Air Force Base, AR ,FT. Belvoir, VA ( good if you want to be in the DC area) Dam Neck,VA (VA Beach area). These have all been nice campgrounds and price can't be beat, Ft Belvoir is a bit pricy but it is the DC area). I use the Militar campground app and have had no problems. I consider the use of military facilities one of our benefits in retirement.
