Hey WaterBoy, I cross-trained into 291X1 back in 1982. Made it for 2 years before I went back into my primary AFSC (207X1). I can credit those 2 years and that AFSC with getting me into a computer position later, and eventually that's which way my second career went. Not telecommunications, but Computer operator (manager more precisely).

I think 291 was one of three AFSCs which were combined into the 491 fields in 1985. When I enlisted in 1986, the clerk put down on my paper what he thought was the new number for programmer(X2), but it was for operator(X1) instead. His faulty memory ended up with me going to operator school, but I was able to cross-train into X2 after three years. All in all, it was good experience, and I'm still in computers now.

They changed the 491 to 3C0 sometime in the 90's, and I understand it all changed again sometime after I got out (2003). Can't ever leave things the same, eh?

Why do the Army and Air Force make it so hard?

In the Navy, I was an Electronic Technician.

I was an 811X0 for 5-1/2 years. I was at Loring and Vandenburg. Perhaps we met somewhere. And as we used to say "SAC sucks."

Ellsworth, RAF Upper Heyford and F.E. Warren. Never made it to Loring or Brandenburg.

"And as we used to say "SAC sucks."" Lol, we would say "SAC salute" and everyone would shrug their shoulders in unison

I started out as a PVT E-1 with the MOS of 31K (Wire Dog), When I made PFC, I changed to 31V (Radio repair) and was put in charge of a MP company’s commo section. Made SGT just before getting out of active and transitioned to the National Guard while using the GI Bill to go to college. I made SSG in the National Guards before becoming a ROTC Cadet and switching the SMP cadet in the Guards. I was in charge of the other Cadets (eleven cadets from MS2-MS4) and the Battalion Commo Section. Upon graduation, I received a Regular Army commission as a Signal Officer. First duty after BSOC was platoon leader for 18 months (deployed on 21 missions for a total of 432days during that time). The day after making 1LT (OE-1) I became a BSO (Battalion Signal Officer) of an ADA battalion for 16 months.
The wife gave me an ultimatum, her or the ARMY. I could only be married to one. I took six months to make the decisions. She talked me into the National Guard, where I became a company XO for a very weak company commander. After two years of beginning an XO, (14 years and seven months total time in the Military) I took off my boots.
Along the way I did Airborne, Air Assault and RIP (Range Indoctrination Program). Was deigned Ranger school, even after completing RIP, due to the fact my MOS was Combat Support and not Combat.

Oh….I still have the wife after almost 16 years

During my time in the USMC (1976-1988) I was a 4321, public affairs specialist - trained as a journalist and photojournalist. Got to spend time at Norfolk, VA & Guantanamo Bay. Was transferred to Albuquerque, NM in 1982 to be the Public Affairs NCO for recruiting in New Mexico & West Texas. My last two years were spent as a production recruiter (8411), asking young men and women what made them good enough to join my Marine Corps! Some I actually let enlist...
