Retired Army 31B
I spent 23 years in as an Army MP, started as a 95B and we changed to 31B. Loved the Service but enjoy being a Civilian now.

We lost one of my acquaintances last week; he lost his 2 year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig disease). He was a fighter pilot in the Air Force and Indiana National Guard, and a captain for American Airlines.
His funeral was yesterday. During the service they showed a video of him taking off in his F-4 Phantom jet and disappearing into the sunset. Very appropriate!!

Sorry to hear rockfordroo. I just heard we lost one of our guys yesterday from my first assignment in Japan. All I've heard so far was "another heart attack". I hadn't seen him in many years, but I still remember him like it was yesterday. RIP.

12 1/2 years Navy - 76 to 89
Submarines (fast attacks) - spent a whole lot of time following the Russians around.
Do miss being up in the sail in the middle of the night when we were on the surface.
Definitely do not miss the number of hours or the "smell" of a sub. If you have not experienced it, trust me, you don't want to

I still find books on the shelf that smell like the boat. As you said, that is a stench you will never forget. I remember coming into port after being under for a while and thinking that fresh air stank. Thanks for your service.

Don't you bubbleheads go around thinking only sub's have a distinct odor. DFM CV's had a very specific petroleum smell to them. The CVN's I sailed on didn't have that scent.
