Was going to comment but decided against diving into what will most likely cause a heated debate ending with the mods closing the thread down.

I am willing to bet the vast majority of users of this forum stand for the flag. Politics are irrelevant. It is decorum and respect. The members of this forum seem to have that well in hand.

Tim, I believe we who care need to stand our ground demonstrate and pronounce our belief. And, as hard as it may be, we need to remember that we served so others were free to do their thing. And, I hope civility can remain here so the post stays open. The intent was not to cause an issue, but to state an opinion.

I hear you, but if that is the end state then quite possibly some of us may be in the wrong forum.

It’s heartwarming to see those cows standing for the flag...they could teach athletes a thing or two.

Since this is in a veteran's forum...

Did you know that when the US flag is raised, lowered, or passing you, as in a parade or in review, all Armed Forces members - active, retired, and veterans - in civilian clothes, are authorized and encouraged to render a hand salute.

This was in the 2008 Defense Authorization Act. Before this law was passed, military members and veterans in civilian clothes were only authorized to place their hands on their hearts, like other civilians.

So, next time you're at a parade, ball game, and you see the flag, or hear the National Anthem, stand at attention and render a proper salute.

I still do the ol' hand or hat over the heart. Old habits dies hard. I feel weird saluting out of uniform/uncovered.

NJKris, I appreciate your thoughts. For the past ten years I have presented a Memorial Day program with of course the National Anthem and Taps following the Flag Retirement portion of the program. Crowd size has reached over 200 in the campground where I present the program. Since the new guidelines were promulgated I have always informed the audience with the new "rule" concerning saluting. Most of the known veterans in the crowd are like NJKris and respectfully place cap or hand over heart. They all feel uncomfortable after so many years of knowing a salute had required one to be covered. Maybe in time some will accept the new standard. But, either way, they all stand and salute in their preferred manner.

It's great that you do that. They no longer teach basic stuff like flag protocol in schools anymore (gee, wonder why). So people like you are the final hope that some people will 'get it'.

ppine, your neighbor has an agenda and is trying to send his/her convoluted message. Conspiracy theories, special interest groups and other morons often use that tactic. They are not smart enough to realize that is a manner of surrendering their rights gained from years of service and sacrifice from men and women to assure and defend those rights.
