Eglin AFB, 1973-1974. Had my own room, chow was excellent,(steak & shrimp weekly) close to the ocean, worked part time off base making some extra $$$. Got to work on many different birds in the USAF inventory. Base had a nice auto shop where I did a lot of work on my car.

Last year before I retired

I was stationed on Johnston Atoll, 800 miles SW of Hawaii, from 92 to 93.

Great food, easy duty (issiing chemical waepons to a contractor for destruction), all the scuba you wanted, year round sunshine and lots of roads to run.

All that plus pay? What more could you ask for?

I retired and worked for the contractor for 7 more years!

Hard to pick which was favorite but Clark and other PI sites in the 70's and Heidelberg Germany most of the 80's as USAF assigned to a Army airfield.

Red face

I was driving for a major (army) before and in vietnam 1968-69. Great guy but he got special orders 3 mos in and I ended up leaving the 5/12 and was assighned to the crip platoon on 199th brigade for the rest of my tour. Driver of deuce and a half and RTO. That was an experience. Really liked driving for Major Fisher.

Osan AB Korea May 1984-May 1985. Went to Pope AFB from there and missed it so much I filled out a new Dream Sheet one week later. To my surprise I got orders right back to Osan Jan. 1987-Jan. 1988.

Well, I was active USAF, Fire fighter, from 88 to 96.
My favorite assignment was RAF Alconbury, England from 90 to 93. A great spot to take in most of Europe. It rained alot but we had fun!

88-90 Minot AFB, ND
90-93 RAF Alconbury, UK - TDY's to Saudi, Turkey, Ill, Tx
93-96 Hanscom AFB, MA

What is that old saying about the only good tour is the one your on. I had a bunch of good ones, but the best was RAF Upper Heyford from 85 - 91. Being of Scottish genes I spent alot of time seeing the country. Got to spend alot of TDY's to Germany, Scotland ( St. Andrews home of the Great sport of golf ) along with trips to Saudi, Turkey and Iraq during Desert Storm.

Tough choice between Misawa AB Japan and Kunia HI. I liked Misawa because I was still young, unmarried, and could do lots of stupid things and live to tell about them. The mission was great also, though I didn't think so at the time. Hawaii, because the weather was perfect...365 days a year! Oh yeah...make me get out in the middle of January and mow my grass! When I'm done, I'll grab my boogie board and head to the North Shore and cool off!

I enjoyed all of my assignments but the best had to be as an instructor at the Air Force Academy. I really enjoyed the mountains. Working with the cadets was great also. My job at Andrews, AFB was great but the area (DC) made it my worst assignment. My family and I did not like all the traffic, crime, noise, and too many people for such a small area (we were raised in the country of NC). Overall, I had a blessed career!

Basically I was CID (that is Civilian In Disguise) After returning from Vietnam I worked as a race relation investigator for a couple of years, then as a martial arts instructor for a while, then on to recruiting duty for nine years, then worked as an Integrated Logistical Support Analyst until I retired. Not one of them was a bad assignment in my mind and all were very interesting while I was serving. But none qualified me for civilan life.

Cheyanne Mountain is the coolest place to work unless you were at Area 51.

Do you know where the new Area 51 is located? I won't tell.

Yes, my best assignment by far...VAFB 1975-1978. But it's not really in Santa Barabara...Santa Barabara COUNTY. My only daughter was born there and we named her Barbara.

Come on - most assignments were not fun while you were doing them! It is only now, with the passage of time that they seemed great!

Heck, I had such a "great time" that I am now President of the USS Will Rogers Veterans Association, Inc. We are a nonprofit that runs reunions every couple of years so we can all get together and talk about the "good times" we had while punching holes in the ocean at 3 knots for 75 days at a time! Yup, 75 days UNDER water - great times! ;-)

Clearly, we made some great friendships and have some good stories!
