Who said "You Can't Take It With You"?

This used to be my Support Vehicle for my Yamaha WR250R.......

After 2 years of heavy travel, I sold it.

I just bought a new T12RBST. A bit of a downsize, but it should still meet my travel needs. I have made a mock-up for a hitch carrier and will be getting the receiver welded on next week.

I am looking to get out West again soon - Hopefully this Fall.

Have you given any thought of what you're going to use for counterweight up front?

Oh yes. The bike and carrier will weigh about 330 lbs. To counterbalance that, the front gets a Honda EU3000 generator, 10 gallons of gasoline, and a pair of T-105 Trojan batteries for a total of 355 lbs.

That leaves me a bit over 300 lbs for cargo. Most of what I will carry will be in my SUV, so I feel safe about the loading & balancing factors.

That's good. I know what one bag of misplaced laundry did to cause sway in my old pup.

I guessed the bike and carrier was going to be about 300lbs. So I was close.

Sorry to be the downer here but have you checked what your axel is rated for on your TT? a extra 700lbs might be pushing it. I have looked at doing the same but a very trusted mechanic of mine warned strongly against it.

Turns, you have won me over on not adding additional weight on rear bumper, however my last trip trough camper wish land, I noticed that FR is shipping units with the frame extended about 6 inches past rear wall of unit. To this frame extension they are attaching a fold down cargo carrier that extends out 30 inches or so and is attached to the extended frame rails. Did not see a weight limit on carrier which should be a concern I would think! Also noticed on the new Sandpiper 5ers they are attaching a deck that is about 8 feet that attaches to the frame and folds up across the back. When deck is down it does have two cables that attach to the futherest conors of the unit. Has FR started beefing up frames to support these decks and cargo carriers. Does anyone know?

Possibly on "real" campers.
But definitely not on "ultra lite" , "lite" , a frames, hybrids and pop ups.

My sabre has a fold down rack factory installed.

Thanks for clearing that up, key is factory installed. Just wondering, should we go with newer tt, would be a Flagstaff again. Getting the bug seeing the 2015 models that rollied out, am hearing 2016 should be at dealers shortly. Of course will see them in August in Godhen!

This is my certification tag:

It is based on actual completed weight at the factory with all options installed. I don't expect to carry water - I will use bottled water carried in the SUV for drinking, and use campground showers.

The receiver tube that I am installing is 36" long and will attach to at least 3 frame crossmembers. I may also add reinforcements and/or gussets based on what I see once I get under the trailer for the test fit.

Although the factory rear bumper carries my ample weight without any flexing, I am not using it for weight bearing - that will be carried by the receiver. I will strap the cycle carrier to the bumper for stability - to keep the carrier from teeter tottering. It will also serve as a plan B if the main system fails.

Axle Rating

When I worked for the Forest Service, we always ordered our trailers with axle ratings at twice what our load was. It is necessary if you use the trialer much on dirt roads. I broke the axle on my small camping trailer because I didn't follow this rule.

Forest river will not let you order "for the most part" heavier axles.
Unless the factory has an optional axle that can be ordered which isn't very common.

Then again think about your warranty mostly likly void when adding to rear bumper or frame. Later RJD

In all cases the frame warranty will be void if there's a hitch installed.
Unless THE MANUFACTURE OKs It, Which They wont.
