15 to 50 Amp Extension?
I boondock quite a bit and often power my 5er off a Honda 2kw gen.
I am thinking of making a power cord with a 15 amp male plug on one end and a 50 amp female, to plug into the 5er on the other.
The reason is so I don't have to wrestle with the 50 amp cord when all I want to do I'd plug into the generator which is sitting right next to the rig.
Has anyone made something like this? What do you all think?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
I've used 15a male to 30a female on boats, but I've never seen a 15 --> 50 amp commecially made. I would think it would be OK to run lights, but not your A/C.

STOP NOW !!! IF your generator is like most generators: The 50 receptacle is 220vAC. The 30amp receptacle (if there is one) will be 110 +/-vAC. I made a big mistake with my generator once. Mine came with a factory supplied 50 ft. extension cord and was clearly marked on the male end "110vAC". The female end was as a normal 110vAC receptacle would be. I changed to female end to the 30 RV female connector to use with my TT. Big bad mistake. The power cord was mis-labled, I was getting a full 220vAC to my TT, I fried my micorwave, and the converter. I had done the worst thing possible: ASSumed that the power cord was wired as marked. It is properly wired and marked now. So please check your 50 amp receptacle on your generator, your power cord, and make sure you are only getting the 110vAC for your 30 amp connection.

Then we built this do dad.
One extension cord 15 amps per side.
Comes in pretty handy.

Thanks Mike, that's exactly what I have in mind. Haven't seen one commercially either, wondering why not...... Also understand about AC, my genset won' t power AC anyway.
Thanks to others for input. My genset has only 110V out so no worries there.

When and if you do this you'll have to see which side of the 50 amp plug that the a/c is on.
Normally the a/c is on one leg and the control center is on the other.
Food for thought.

I don't see a problem with it. You'll have to jumper the 2 hot wires in the 50 Amp receptacle and you'll be limited to what your genny can supply but you'll figure that out quick. Depending on the length you need I'd use 10 ga. cord. 12 ga. will work but cord never carries power as efficiently as regular THHN wire so I usually go up one size.

I actually have to dogbone converters. I go from 50amp to 30amp to 15/20amp. It is nice because it was cheaper than what I found the 50 to 15 that I found at a store AND gives me the flexibility of camping at a 30amp site (which I've done a couple of times).

I use two dogbone converters (same as ependydad, 50 x 30; 30 x 15) with a 12 ga extension cord to run the converter when the camper is in storage, but have used it several times to run one a/c without any problems.

Ahh yes- my extension cord is either 10 ir 12 gauge and is 50'. I need all of it for parking at home when we're getting ready and are cleaning out.
