pppffffftttt re the poo poohin' the awning lights.

I'm new to this stuff so I wanted some! Soooooo, not wanting to look like everyone else I made my own.

Used solar powered LED lights....a sixty bulb string...and bought recycled shotgun shells. Shoved each bulb down into the re crimped shell and sealed it off with hot melt glue.

I started out with a regular electric strand of lights. Didn't like that I had to run a cord from the outside outlet, under the steps and wind it around the awning arm. T'was unsightly and a trip hazard.

Those flower pot lights have been around for 40 forevers. My mom had one when I was in my teens, and that was way back when old Shep was just a pup.

That is a great idea. Think I'll show this to my DH.

I've made a few of these for friends with them only paying for parts. I just like making these for friends. I have so far used orange, white, blue, green, red and camo buckets. The camo buckets just don't impress me, but that's what Paul wanted. I have used the plastic lamp bases with a 1/4" spacer between the bucket inside bottom and lamp base so the cord is not pinched against the bucket bottom. The spacers are available at most big box home improvement stores and are cheap. I have used regular incandescent bulbs, those "curly" florescent bulbs, and for something neat--use aquarium bulbs that are almost like a black-light. I have also used the "1--2" lamp bases that screw into the lamp base and you can mount two bulbs into this adapter. Making the "camping light bucket" so you can store the cord in the bucket is the better way to go. I made the first two with holes near the bottom to push the cords into--not a good idea there. These are so neat and cost me about $18 each for all parts to make.

Who's gonna go solar with the bucket lights?
Perhaps the changing color ones too?

I would like to try something like this but not sure the remote would work since the bulb is inside. Might be worth it to buy one and see how it works...

Carried one for years. I first saw them used in State Parks and COE campgrounds. I use a work light with a metal protective cage around the bulb. Down here in Texas they are used as much for a bug attractor as for illumination. Set up a little distance from where people are sitting they help draw the night flying bugs and moths away.

I can see many of these lights throughout the campgrounds. All it will take is for one person to have one and it will pass on to other campers. I'm going to get my DH going on making one for us.

Personally I don't like the bucket lights. I do have one of those flower pots lights that I like a lot. Here's a pic, the colors don't come through very well. It's a flower pot inverted.

I've had mine for quite awhile and it works great. I use it under the edge of the TT so I can see the TT when aproaching at night. Made mine with a used spotlight fixture I had laying around .

We have used these for years. saw some older campers one night a Lake Whitney using them and by our next trip I had made up some for our camping group. We did drop from 5 gallon to 2.5 gallon to save a little storage space. I was surprised at how much light they put out!

Made one yesterday from a blue 5gal Lowes bucket. Looks really cool at night. I did as an earlier poster suggested and used a ceramic celing light base bolted to the inside bottom and ran a short piece of drop cord out the bottom also to keep rain water from getting inside. And I used one of the new bulbs that puts out the same as a 75 watt (only because it runs cooler and won't melt the bucket...I hate those bulbs!).

Do they, perchance, look like these?

Love those shotgun shells! So now I have the blue Lowe's bucket, a green pickle bucket from a local restaurant, and a red pickle bucket from Firehouse Subs. The red really makes a great light, the old adage about red lights aside. Firehouse Subs sells them for $2 and the money goes straight to your local firefighters. That's a win/win.

Outside of light, do these lights provide any other task, bugs etc?

Why would anyone want a bucket light?
Bucket Lights produce a pleasing, diffuse light that lights up your entire campsite while not offending you or your neighbors with glare. They are lightweight, easy-to-store, easy-to-use, stand up to the elements and look great. Our bucket lights serve the same purpose as traditional wooden camping signs, but give you more versatility. You can place them anywhere. They do not necessarily have to be hung up. They can sit on the ground or anywhere else. They also light up to create a more eye catching sign after dark, plus they provide your campsite with a pleasing diffuse light. We believe strongly that bucket lights are the safest, most durable, and most interesting campsite light you can buy.
Plus some use the bucket to wash stuff in. the bucket can be used as a chair or step stool.

You can pack stuff like tools or water or game.......

Forgot teh linkage....
