back in the 1970's and 1980's when i installed a lot of kitchens we used steel wool to fill gaps to keep out the mice and "arrogant insects"
(or palmento bugs, as they call them down south)
. But now I like the plastic fibers better, no issues with rust and less breaking fibers. Injecting a little foam into the fibers does a good job sealing the gap.
