Accident or incident?

I retired from a large company after 40 years that did not believe that accidents just happen. I read a post the other day of a man that pulled his RV into the side of his garage. Accident or incident? Maybe just words!! I am posting a photo below of an incident my wife and I had on a border crossing. After having an hour of very heated words I pulled forward 40+ feet before hanging a right and left rear of my coach caught a metal pole and took $13,000 to fix it. Accident? I don't think so. Driving off mad? Yes... Driving stupid? Yes.. Costly incident? Yes. My fault? Yes. Embarrassing? Yes. We need to own up to things we do and stop calling them accidents. Remember, if someone does one of these stupid things and others voice their opinions, well now they are being judgemental. Right? NO not everyone has accidents. Me, I am sometimes covered up with stupid. Now when a man crosses over the centerline and hits someone head on... That someone had an accident.Click image for larger version

I like to say "That wasn't an accident, that was a negligent!" Then I usually have to explain the difference.

An accident is literally defined as

Quote:
an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...8#q=accident&*

They are the same thing. It's semantics.

Yes I was negligent in my dutys. When I drove into the stall to see attendant I saw the two poles and my truck sat there for a hour of discussion with border agents. The pole was the least of my worries.

I would also argue that when we say accident, it somewhat implies it was outside of our control. This is not the case in the vast majority of "accidents." Negligent implies one did not do as one should have and had a role in the occurrence of an incident. Pretty common for people to choose the option that implies the least amount of blame when describing an "incident." After having kids, you realize this is hardwired, too. I didn't teach my kids to say "the cup fell off the table" as opposed to "I knocked the cup off the table." That avoidance of claiming responsibility is innate!!!

As a person that has had a couple of run-ins with border guards, I would like to hear your story.
Sorry about the damage to your rig.

We came into Buffalo about 10:30pm and God took us to Peace bridge going to KOA. Could not turn around. Guard told us to cross to Canada. They would turn us around. They were great. Did ask if we had weapon and I said yes. They took it and placed it in my tool box. Went to USA side. When we pulled into slot they asked for proper papers. We had no passport. They got threatning and said I would spend 7 years in prison for bringing in weapon. Things got pretty bad. I pulled up and hit pole. Every agent standing there were laughing. They finally let us go. I contacted my NC senator and he delivered my letter head of Homeland security. After investigation I got letter of apology and they admitted my civil rights were violated.

It's semantics. I've been in claims for 40 years. These are considered accidents as well as insured incidents. They were unintended. If they were intended, they'd be uninsured incidents/accidents. But rally called intentional acts. Not covered.

Your episode with the US border guards was very similar to one of mine. I never had any problems at all with Canadian border agents. The US agents were very mean and threatening. Like you, I had done nothing wrong and they tried to make an example out of me. They just did it because they could. I got "written up", and received a border crossing violation letter in the mail. Makes me never want to go to Canada again.

I define the entire event as an incident. The event that occurred during the incident was an accident unless it was an on purpose.

IMO- The accident always happens in the brain of the operator

The incident/crash/collision/w.h.y is the result.

I, too, hate when I hear on the radio or Tv there is "a car accident". Vehicles don't drive themselves. If I let it bug me, I'd go crazy.

Oh I deal with these a couple times a day it seems, lol... It's an accident if you didn't mean to do it. If you meant to do it its a way different report

Swampweasel, don't blame Canada for the actions of the US border guards. You said you didn't have a problem with the Canadian border agents. My experience is the Canadian border agents treat you with a lot more respect than the US border guards. The US guards ask lots more questions and just want to intimidate you hoping you will hesitate, studder or look guilty. That gives them reason to search every thing. Why else is there a bunch of the US guards standing around with their hand ready to draw down on you.
I've never had a problem crossing either way but I do notice a lot of the guards actions even if they don't hold any one. The last time going into Canada we had 4 US guards asking me questions and 5 on the other side of the car looking in the windows and 1 watching DW. She didn't know it until I told her later.
They did let us through after I answered about 20 questions.

Hi scrapper,
I'm not blaming c
Canada at all. If I go to Canada, then I have to re-enter the US at a border crossing. Just don't want to be hassled like that any more. I love Canada!

We've been to Canada 3 times in the past 4 years. We're going again this year. We don't take the TT because I have a 1/2 ton pickup and the trailer is just under 9k. The pickup is paid for and DW says no more now that I'm retired.
