Anybody notice getting a 15lb LP bottle when swapping?

Follow that up with Gas -vs- Diesel and then... do you run your propane refrigerator on the road?

We were dog sitting for one of our neighbors here in the RV park and due to an unexpected cold snap here in the Arizona desert, and their TT ran out of LP.

Of course, this was on a Sunday morning and all of the LP places were closed, so I took one of their 30LB tanks to the local Love's truck stop on I-8 in Yuma to get it filled.

It was completely empty...to have it filled, including tax was $18.11...at a Love's truck stop!

Make sure you also ask about nitrogen in it too.

It's the same trick a lot of manufacturers have learned. I used to be able to buy a 50# bag of dog food for like $30. Then it because a 45# bag for the same price. Now it's more like 38#. It's a way for them to make more money without actually raising the price.

The problem with propane is that they can't make the container smaller. So they just fill it up less... and still charge the same price. Same basic idea.

I have three large Maincoone cats...and they go through a lot of it!

I haven't noticed it as much with litter. We have 4 cats (although only one is a Maine Coon) and we always get the big 35# bucket. It lasts for a good while and then I get a "free" bucket when it's empty.

Yep, I get the math. I'm just saying I can't get those prices around here. Here, it's closer to $4/gal. So, my prices end up in the $17-19 range. Perhaps if I shopped around, I could get it down into the $3/gal range.

Two years ago that 35-pound bucket (Yellow Tidy Cat) was a 40-pound bucket.

Anytime you swap you loose $$$$ per GAL. $15 at Walmart and $19 at ACE. That's 15# VS 20#.

The only time I exchange my tank is when it is out of date and they wont refill it, then you get a newer tank and the can continue to get that one refilled!

I always get my tanks refilled at my local ACE Hardware store. I only exchange when the dates on the tanks are expired. Wen I exchange, I make sure the store sales associate allows me to look at the dates on the tank so I can choose only new tanks.

Some places will not take the old expired tanks for exchange either....our local neighborhood gas station will refuse them because THEIR exchange supplier will not take them either ☹️

I keep watching for the USPS to make stamps smaller instead of charging more for them!

Why not just have the tank recertified? I think I was charge 5$ for each tank I had recertified and they filled them at 1.90 a gallon as I recall. It was about 15 miles away VS my local usually place. Not to mention I can't swap my 2.5, 7 and 10 gallon tanks.

The tanks you Swap out are ridiculously expensive, but they are convenient as anyone can sell them anywhere.

They are truthful in what lb they are selling but claiming it is full isn't exactly being truthful, this is where I feel most consumers are being cheated as they can't compare, They can see a sign for 3$ a gallon and figure 15 for filling and oh I can swap for a nice clean tank for 15-20 in a swap... ok good deal... except its 5 lbs shy.

One thing not mentioned is if you still have some gas in the tank but are near empty... now your losing on the low end too. At home I have about 5 tanks for the BBQ even a small 2.5 gallon love it... Anyways when the Camper burns through the 10 gallon and has burned a few gallons on the 2nd I run and have them all filled.... Sometimes on the road im lucky and top off so much easier to fill without pulling the tank.

For smaller tanks or larger tanks, it makes sense. Not for 20# tanks.

I agree I had to call around some places couldn't some did but wanted a week and or were excessively priced that it was stupid, I only assume they wanted to certify "Big tanks" where people would pay big bucks vs bigger bucks for a replacement tank.
But the place I went to seemed to actually specialized or target this sort of work. It was a propane store of sorts, BBQ, heaters, dryers, LP conversion type place. Think "King of the Hill" I think it took longer to fill then certify the tank, they engraved - stamped the tank with their info. and new year. Great people.

A few years ago there was a class action law suit against Blue Rhino for only putting 17 lbs in a tank. They lose, but only the lawyers got anything much. They then removed all the signs that said exchange for a full one and actually reduced the film to 15 lbs.

Don’t buy from them if you can help it. There are lots of campgrounds that sell propane as well as TSC and some service stations too. I’ll bet many truck stops sell propane too

So now you get 3/4 of a tank and most are not even aware of it.
