KOA's have become a crap shoot. A couple of nice ones I have stayed in were in Elk City, OK and Albuquerque, NM. The one in Little Rock, AR left a bit to be desired.

Disagree for a couple of reasons.
1. The acreage for an RV park and ameneties often dictate a higher cost than the local motels...especially if they can build multiple stories and get more bang for their square ft. of real estate. This is particularly true in high rent districts like beaches.
2. Price is ALWAYS a function of supply and demand...and in many places RV parks building has been a tough sell since it is synonymous with trailer parks and "trailer trash" in many locales and zoning boards. Often you can find dozens of hotels all trying to fill their rooms and competing...while the RV park has no competition and a full sign all season leading to higher prices.

I suppose that may be valid in larger urban areas and areas with high tourist traffic, but I don't camp close to those areas and that certainly hasn't been my experience camping in scenic rural areas or near small cities. I'd rather stay away from crowded cities and touristy areas as I don't find them relaxing. Besides, if I'm going into the big city I really don't want to try to find parking for my big pickup.

I must be one of the bottom 1%-ers.

The highest I have EVER paid was $42/night on Galveston island, and $700/mo. just east of Ft. Meyers FL (didn't go back, as too much booze and condescension).

My usual cost is $8-12 at COE campgrounds or Larry McMurtry style cg's with PA or BLM cg's in the mountains.

Water and electric on the beach in Port Lavaca for $350/mo.

Best kind of place is on the blue highways....seeing a sign saying "live music". Have some catfish/ribs/shrimp, some longnecks, dance a little, sit in with the band, and stay overnight in the parking lot.

Then a couple days at a wildlife refuge, getting a couple checkmarks on the lifelist.

But I never camp -- 'cept for local fishing and music -- in summer.....too many dogs and kids.

If I was doing interstates and KOA's for upwards of 100/night.....I'd probably give up on RV-ing.

For that reason we rarely move the 5er from June to Sept. Besides ~~ that is a great time to keep the boat fishing the Atlantic!
