bug guts on the windshield
Tips and tricks please!! Any secret sauce that cuts right though the bug stew on the windshield?
My current favorite trick is hot water in a bucket with a healthy squirt of dish detergent and a stiff brush - used as quickly as possible (like every gas stop). Even with vigorous effort some waxy bug smears remain. If the sun has cooked those juices onto the glass they simply don't want to come off.
Obviously I don't want something that is going to ruin the finish on the fiberglass under the windshield. I'm thinking a couple of glugs of ammonia added to the bucket of suds might help.
Ideas?

try treating the windshield with rain-x it not only does a great job repelling the rain but also keeps bugs from sticking as well. it will also give you some extra life in those windshield wipers.

What is the last thing that goes through a bug's mind as he hits the windshield? Answer: His a**

I never has the guts to do it but an old truck driver told me steel wool, he even demonstrated for me, soap, water and steel wool. YMMV

Tooth paste works well also. Will even remove scratches from a torn wiper blade, if not too deep.

I've used 00 Steel Wool for years on my vehicles glass and chrome. It will not scratch either one and really does a good job cleaning bug gunk and such.

Old or new dryer sheets. Just wet and wipe the area and magic happens. I save the used sheets in a Zip lock bag to use.

If you decide to use another brand just be sure it does not contain Pumice. It removes the tough bugs on paint as well. I usually hit it with a wax afterwards.

x3 on those dryer sheets! We live in Florida, and those love bugs in the summertime get plastered all over the bumper and windshield. those used dryer sheets soften them right up for much easier removal. (P.S. I am not going to explain what a "love bug" is!) Randy

did a 600km round trip this last monday and wow is my windshield nasty now! they baked on half way through the day and the wipers will just not get them off!! only place they did come off is in the middle where the two wipers overlap paths...
guess its the wax on the windows that do that.

I have not tried dryer sheets - I will. It makes sense - it's a bit of nonwoven material covered with a fragrant wax - and others here are suggesting wax as well. Hand cleaner sounds like a good idea too and yes I think 000 steel wool would work, but do you use a fresh bit each time - do you toss the bit you have used or?? I'm thinking of the rusty mess next to the kitchen sink...

I keep a good coat of Rain-X on the windshield. Then I keep an old clay bar for the ones that are really stuck. I use the quick detailer and the the claybar and it cleans them right off.

If you can get up in the morning when there is dew on the windshield, they will wipe off. I also vote for Rain X.

Just so you know the worst soap you can ever put on fiberglass or clearcoat is dish detergent. Use a good quality car was soap you can buy from an auto store that is rated for use with new cars. A good glass cleaner to use after a windshield soak and soap is a product called Invisible Glass.

Actually Stoner's Invisible glass is what I use. I cleans most of the bugs off the first time.

No particularly helpful advice from me. I drove through a swarm of bees in South Dakota once, and that was indeed a mess. As I recall it was a thunderstorm up the road that helped...

nope! not even after a week of rain using the wash brush and soap, not even the plastic kitchen scrubbie. We're talking tough bug guts!
