I would have done the same out of 4 x 4's, but was in Weslaco, TX at the time and Camping World had them on special for $39/pr. As usual, couldn't wait so I bought them. Best $39 + tax I've spent as far as a safety/stability solution.

I could only find X Chocks for the wide spaced axles at $79 + shipping each or about $200 with shipping a set. I took 2x4s, glued & screwed to create 4x4 ends where the threaded rod goes thru to tighten them up. Think of adding another 2x4 to give it a 4x6 ends against the tires.

We've been looking at the BAL x-chocks and they seem to get a lot of good reviews. Do you use these in addition to plastic or rubber chocks, or to replace them? Also, does it make a lot of difference whether you put them on both sides?

I use both X chocks and the tire wedges. The wedges to park the RV and then the X chocks on both sides to stabilize the RV.

Use them on both sides and don't use any other chocks of any kind. Haven't had a need for additional chocking.

I started with the plastic yellow Walmart ones we used on our popup. Then I bought the BAL roto chocks for between the tires. I recently purchased the hard rubber Harbor Freight ones.
Next trip I'll use the rubber ones and the BAL chocks. Overkill? Even if so I'll stick with it.

You are the only one that has to be satisfied with how you chock your trailer regardless of what others do. Do it the way you like and forget what others do unless you think they have a better way.

I have used the yellow plastic chock and rubber mallet method for years. Never had a problem. Earlier this year I noticed an "expiration date" molded into the plastic.

Say what!

I know UV light rays are hard on plastic but an expiration date......
