I put a piece of scotch tape on dead batteries as a way to mark them.

Great choice for "Living within my means" and camping for one...

mine are rechargeable. no way do i buy plain batteries. at prices they charge for the short life off. i'll say the same for flashlights or one brand at least...mag light. about 1995 my older brother pulled his police size maglight out and lit up the entire top of an oak tree about 75 yards away and showed a group of us an owl that was causing a stir. i was shocked at the brightness of the light and he told me it was rechargeable too. i said i want one...where? he said the hardware store where he got it and it was the only place that carried $115. i said are you crazy? for a flashlight? and asked do you know how many batteries i can buy with that? he replied you know how many batteries i've bought the last two years? none. i still wanted one, there wasn't at the time a hand held flashlight with that beam. in 1997 i bought one just like it, came with a home and car charger. since 1997 i bought one replacement cylinder, the battery replacement for $19 and a package of 2 bulbs replacing one for $7. since they have come out with more brands and sizes which are equally good and smaller. the police size i have is a hand full of flashlight but that also makes it a good defense tool and hand warmer on a chilly night...yes the beam is bright enough it gets that warm.
