at least on the ones I'm familiar with even though there is no braking pressure there will still be power used by the selonoids. We used to test them with the hubs off when there were bad ones or broken wires. (the most common reason we found for failure) Most of the trailers we worked on wre commercial trailer for hauling heavy equipment I'm sure the systems basically work the same.

Exactly, it will kill your battery and potentially overheat your magnets while providing no brakes. Where is the up side in that?
