Here is my set up. My one kayak is 12' and weighs 70 pounds. to make it easier, I purchased a Yakima Showdown which enables me to load onto the rack at mid door height and than I lift the mechanism and slide it onto the roof and lock in place. Expensive but worth every penny.

I chose to go with the Yakima to haul 12 and 12.5 foot kayaks behind my 5th wheel. Load them from the bed of the truck with Yakima's roller racks. Obviously I load the kayaks before I hook up our 5er. Thule had similar design and the two of them seem to have the highest quality based on my online research. Have hauled on round trips from Ohio to NC and Ohio to Florida with no issue. Bought our components from a dealer in NC where we purchased our kayaks and they discounted below online prices. Their input as to what works was helpful and they assisted with initial rigging at no charge. Found other dealers that only sold the product and had no knowledge on how they worked. My GMC does not have rain gutters (naked roof) so wanted to make sure I had something that was not going to fly off roof when traveling 70 mph.

Ladder racks are much easier to deal with than the kayak racks. Easy to install in bed and then easy to strap the kayaks on .

Here's what I have - from Home Depot.

I don't have a picture with my SUP on the racks and the trailer hooked up but you can see the overhang is not a lot and I could move the board (11' 6") farther forward if I needed to.

I have a 5th wheel so I have to carry mine forward. All of my racks are by Thule and are easy on and off. Click image for larger version

Ladder racks are cheap, easy and reliable. This one is $99 on amazon rated at 550lbs, and held on with clamps. Not drilling holes in my bed was a bonus.
Btw these yaks are both 12 footers on an 8 ft bedClick image for larger version

We carry our 10 foot fishing kayaks vertically on the back of the toy hauler in home made racks. Every one of the boat inspection stations will make you stop and want to wash them, so this way the water is outside and dries quickly. Simply make two 12" x 18" brackets with elbows out of schedule 40 pipe nipples. Bolt them on the bumper, stick the boats in, and use motorcycle tie-down straps to hold in place.
