Most of the time....if these things are built correctly they flame out before they hit the ground.

We usually waited until after a good rain when we sent ours off.

We used the very thin plastic bags dry cleaning comes in, soda straws and birthday candles....

Watched a guy light one up last year in a open area next to my campsite. It went up and floated straight for the pines and landed 50ft up in one. Luckily the tree didn't catch fire and burned out in about a minute. Attracted quite the audience! It wouldn't have taken me more than 3 minutes to hookup and get out.

Well, since they've been around for over 1000 years, I think your "going insane" started a long time ago, or at least with your generation.

Regardless of how long they've been around, it is a dumb thing to do flying fire overhead regardless of what generation you're in.

Let's call you both right. Relatively safe in a controlled environment but incredibly stupid with overhead obstructions, like pine trees.

Maybe we can find some kids to fly the Chinese Lanterns over yours and Timmy's property?

Agree, like only on an ocean cruise otherwise, they cannot be controlled.

All I can say is if I saw someone setting them off around my property or me, I would immediately call the law enforcement folks.

Yup, we are insane. Been launching them at the lake for years. We usually have a bunch and other campers come over to look. We call them wishing lanterns. Last year a family came over where Mom was diagnosed with cancer. We launched a bunch of them with her in mind. The cool thing was that we saw them again months later and the cancer ended up being benign. You want to launch them in an area clear of trees. They'll keep gaining altitude until the wax burns up.

I guess we are insane too for playing with fire crackers, hairspray potato launchers, etc.

Or structures below like rubber camper roofs.
