fridge question

Hello all! I am relatively new to the TT scene and have kind of a stupid question. Is it possible/safe to run the fridge in LP mode when the TT is in transit? I want to keep it cold and obviously the 12v system does not run the fridge. The only options I can see are to run it in LP mode or invest in a heavy duty inverter. Thoughts?

We run our fridge while moving. Ours switches automatically to electric when plugged into shore power or when the generator is running. If your fridge is running and you are parked for any length of time (over night) be sure your RV is level.

Yes the fridges are designed to operate on lp while on the road.

The only "caveat" is the recommendation to shut it off while refueling.

While not such an issue with diesel trucks, it unnerves folks at the same island when they hear the burner fire up, so I try to remember to shut it off while fueling my diesel, too.

Does anyone have an actual written reference from a manufacturer that it is safe/approved to run the propane fridge while moving?

This seems to be a point of contention for many people and I've never found anything other than forums discussions, which obviously go either way. IE: it'll cause a fire to no problems at all.

It would be nice to actually find it from an OEM that it's OK to run it.....I ask here because Lou is usually pretty good at finding documentation about RV products.....

I also wouldn't mind running the fridge off a decent inverter if possible.

I don't think the power draw is a big worry for me, although I haven't spec'd out the power draw the fridge would put out. My truck has the ambulance package under the hood which is basically just dual alternators for extra amperage when needed. Dual 105 amp alts straight from GM Trucks....

Other than an oblique reference in the user manual about not worrying about "out of level" while moving because the sloshing of the ammonia will return the liquid back to the boiler.

Also the only DoT prohibitions have to do with having everything turned off while refueling and in "some" tunnels.

In today's litigation happy society, don't you think that if it was not safe, there would be a prominent warning in the manual?

Nah, that's an assumption.

More likely the issue is to avoid saying it's alright to maintain non liability.

Ting is, say it's alright and the first one that burns down (because the fridge was on when it burnt) and the flood gates are open.

I've read stories either way.

IE: fridge was on and caught the trailer on fire, been running with it on for 20+ years and not a problem.

I was just wondering if there was a manufacturer statement either yes or no.

We let it run on LP while driving as well...no issues...knock on wood or knock on something...
