How do you know?
So you have been off camping for a few weeks and return home.
How do you know if the food in the freezer is safe? (Besides the frozen ice cream puddled at the bottom)
If you had put a cup filled with water in the freezer and then placed a quarter on top of the ice, you would know.
If the quarter is at the bottom of the cup, the freezer thawed completely and then refroze when the power came back on. Throw everything out.
If the quarter is in the middle of the ice, the freezer lost power, but the items most likely stayed partially frozen before refreezing. Check each item carefully, but they are most likely still good.
If the quarter is still on top of the ice, the freezer never lost power.
Food is safe.

Great Tip!!!
This will also work perfectly for us who have our trailers on seasonal sites. If we return to the trailer and the clock is blinking we know we've had a power outage but this will certainly quantify as to how long it lasted and if our freezer / refrigerator food may have been compromised.

I put a quarter on my ice and when i came back a month later there were 2 dimes. Darn inflation.

It is a good trick for a short period of time. Electrolytic action will eventually cause the quarter to sink into the ice gradually. If I was a "snowbird" that was away from my home for a 6 month period, I might find the quarter at the bottom of the container even if the freezer did not thaw. Saying that, I myself would not hesitate in doing this for the short time of two month periods.

Alternatively, just put an ice cube in a ziploc bag. If it's still in it's shape, you're good.

Simple solution plastic dip or wrap the quarter in shrink wrap
