How to cover skylight in shower

We have a 2018 Forester 3011DS. It has a skylight in the shower that allows so much sun and heat to build up that it spills over and heats up the motor home. Has anyone found a way to cover this plastic skylight to keep the heat and sun from coming in without totally blocking the light? I'm thinking of painting it.

I used white spray paint on the outside of mine. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It cut the heat and still let some light in.

I painted mine on the inside mating surfaces with rustoleum frosted glass spray. Remove inner bezel. Prep both inside surfaces with alcohol, dry and apply the paint to bottom of dome and top of bezel. After it dries, reassemble. You end up with a translucent white skylight and corresponding reduction in temp.

I took the inner dome out, lined the top of the inner dome with solar blocking screen from Home Depot, and reinstalled. The outer and inner dome sandwich keep the screen in place nicely. I am not sure if yours has the same 2 dome setup but if it does, it is a quick easy mod to do.

I use the Camco insulated door cover on mine and attach with Velcro so it can be removed when we want the light.

Our last RV we wanted all the light blocked out from the skylight, so I painted the outside of it with 3 coats of white paint then 3 coats of black paint and then 3 more coats of white paint. I used paint for plastics and when we got rid of that RV the paint and the skylight plastic dome were still just as good as the day I put it on there. I alternated the white/black/white because I didn't want it to appear black on the inside and I added the black in the middle step to help stop light transmission then I added the white as the topcoat to reflect the sunlight.

If you leave the black coat out and put 2 or 3 coats of white on it, it should block out some heat and light but pass a little.

I just started a similar thread the other day in the Roo/Shamrock forum. Not sure how much it will help, as we have rectangular skylights (while I know some are square), but in case it helps:

Also - I did get one of the Camco door window insulators, and it fits perfectly. So I used some heavy duty white velcro to affix it to the edge around the skylight, and that way I can remove it/put it on whenever I want. Will try it out this week on our next trip. :-)

Either reflectix, preferably on the outside, held in place by Velcro at the corners or a few coatings of Plastidip. Plastidip peels off at the end of the season and leaves no residue, unlike some of the off brands.

I did the white paint for plastic 2 years ago. It cuts the heat and still lets light in.

What I did for my RV was to go to a plastic supply and have a piece of 1/4-3/16 smoked Plexiglas to match the size of the skylight ceiling cover/frame. I drilled holes in the Plexiglas to match the pattern of the skylight frame and mounted it below the frame. I not sure how it help with the heat but does a nice job with the light.

I bought 2" polyfoam from Hobby Lobby. Cut it slightly larger than the opening. Push it in there with no fasteners needed. Easily removed. I also put a piece of reflective foil between the foam and the sky light. Did the same for the vent.

I agree with GL1800Rider. The cover sold by most RV Supply stores is actually for the door window, but fits the skylights perfectly. I covered all 4 of my skylights, but the Velcro allows me to quickly remove them if I want some light or even a little heat in the winter time. A quick fix at a reasonable price!!!
