Installing Door Latch

So I'm wanting to install one of these latches that holds the door open. In the kit it's just the two pieces and some screws. Am I supposed to be trying to hit a stud or something? Super nervous about drilling into my beautiful gel coat. What about screwing in to the door? Anything to look out for there?

New rig? What year and model. Maybe the factory missed it and the dealer will do it for you?

It's a 2016 Apex 300bhs. It definitely wasn't forgotten to install. There's a shock at the bottom of the door currently that only allows the door to open 90*. You can just barely see it there in the photo if you zoom. I took it off and the door opens all the way like on our old camper just fine.

Funny, I have a 16 apex 300bhs and mine came with a door latch installed.

It came on it when I bought it. Pretty sure yours should of too. Just took this pic of it, getting dark here so not the greatest pic.

Thanks. Mine is the same as lewisb13's. It came with the piston closer/opener. I'm wondering if anyone has ever changed this out. It would be nice to be able to open the door all of the way.
