Was wondering how many of you used a king pin lock when:
1. Storing your unit
2. Camping/parked
The reason I ask is I have always locked my bumper pull trailer to make it harder for anyone to hook up and steal my trailers. Just this weekend my daughters friend had their brand new Grey Wolf stolen when they unhooked for a day to visit family. They had not spent a single night in it yet.
Hadn't thought about securing the 5'er but it makes sense and I have a lock on order.
they cannot seal my 5er unless they have a pullrite and I park mine behind my garage, camping is also out of the question since we camp at private parks.
I have one and use it if we are away from the camper for any length of time. While we also have a Pullrite, the adapter to allow it to be towed by any hitch is relatively cheap. Just a bit more than a good lock.
I lock my kingpin at home and put a heavy duty locking cable through the dual tires. I know there is no way to stop theft, but I just hope to deter it, slow it down or make them choose another trailer.
I put a lock on the king pin when it's at the storage lot but never at a campground or RV park.
Same here - I lock it at storage and if it's parked at home and unhitched when I'm getting ready.
Never locked it while camping. I have 4 slides, an awning and water/electric/sewer normally. Someone would have to really want it to go through the effort of disconnecting to steal my camper. And, if they do... I have insurance for that.

I keep it locked in storage (when I remember) but have never locked it while out camping. Now that I think about it, I forgot to put the lock on it when I put in back in storage Monday. Guess I need to run over there this weekend and remedy that.

False!!! Your capture plate is only held on by 4 allen head set screws... It'd take 30 seconds to take them out...
I suggest locking it!
Haven't heard of anyone ever messing with anything but it's pretty cheap insurance...
Considering how long we looked for a floor plan that we both liked, and the hoops we jumped through to get it setup the way we want it, not worth the risk of doing that again.
I lock it when parked on my driveway and I'm just going for fuel in the truck. Locking takes all of 10 seconds; unlocking same amount.

false it is held on with 1 allen head screw, and with all 4 slides out, plus the tripod, chocked, chairs, and sitting at a private campground or state park they can have it if they want it that bad, when it is behind my garage they have to drive 300yards of private narrow driveway and I will have something for them becides the trailer. actually I would like to have a toyhauler so maybe someone knows someone......
How much does a "low cost" 2 5/16" ball cost? Not much. I bought one then cut the stud (threaded part) off. I insert the ball, lock the tongue lock onto it then put a padlock on the tongue lock after removing my tow vehicle. I have actually seen a camper trailer theft take place by lowering the TT onto a 1 7/8" ball using the TT weight to hold it on as they pulled away. We, a friend and I who were camping and saw this, stopped the thieves with my friends truck. They fled, leaving the old Ford truck and stolen camper. Please note here: The local police were called to a State Campground (GA.), they stated that they could do nothing as this was State Property. The State Police were called in and they stated that this was private property so they could not do anything. This is a result of GA. contracting with private ventures to run State Parks. The State Police did tell the TT owner that IF he removed the TT from the thieves truck then they would go to jail for "tampering with evidence". The local Sheriff's Office finally took the initiative to get statements, remove the truck from the TT, and give the TT to the rightful owner. Later the owners did receive word that the thieves were caught as the truck was registered to on of them and they confessed. My friend and I had to give depositions to attorneys in our hometown as witnesses. I never heard if the perps were punished.
