Licence Plate Hinge

I don't know how many have experienced pulling into a parking lot, gas station etc and bent there licence plate from dragging on the ground.. My licence plate is mounted to my rear bumper and also hangs below the bumper. It has been bent a couple times.

Anyways, I just installed a spring hinged licence plate holder. I am hoping this will do the job. I just hope I don't have to back-up when its rubbing the ground, the hinge only springs one way.

Looks good. But one question: does CA not require that the license plate is illuminated?

Isn't there room on the bumper to mount the plate up an inch or so so the plate doesn't extend below the bumper?

I didn't see any plate illumantion light to deal with.

If you look just to the right, that is the light to the licence plate. I could have raised the licence plate up to the rear door hinges but it would have still had 2 to 3 in. hanging below the bumper. If the licence plate would have fit between the rear door hinges, I could have raised it up and been fine. I could have moved the licence plat to another location but then i would have had to move the licence plate light. This was an easy fix, drilled 2 holes mounted and done. Approx 10 min. Also this trailer did not come with under skids.

OK - I didn't recognize the light holder at first look. So I guess you had to mount the plate over the right side hinge,which doesn't seem to be a problem.

Seems like the trailer manufacturer could have come up with a better design to start with.

I don't have the dragging problem, but the dealership mounted our plate with commercial grade zip ties. No bolt rusting or corrosion and no problem changing plates when they expire. You can do the same thing with regular zip ties. The plate doesn't weigh that much and you only get a small amount of swing in the wind.

What happens when you back into a steep driveway? My boat trailer has that plastic flexible plate hanger but the plate still takes a beating.

i see holes in the bottom of the plate, and what looks like a bit of space to attach a bungee cord to on the small black spring. a simple 1 dollar fix if need be. install and remove as needed.

I think I would move the lic plate up to the bottom of the door and use spacers to space the lic plate out enough to clear the hinge.

i think that would be a lot of spacers. maybe move plate up to bottom holes, move bracket up and then let the door fold plate/hinged bracket down. rotate light to shine more on plate, or just call light good and follow the intention if not the letter of the law.
