Memory Foam Mattress Topper
We've purchased these three different times. 1.5, 2 & 3 inch thick. They are never the correct size for the beds. Trimming them to fit has yielded mixed results. Tried using scissors on the 1.5 inch. Worked, but really choppy edge. On the 2 inch, tried a razor blade, making multiple passes. You can't cut through on a single cut. Again, got the job done, but again, looked choppy. Then on the 3 incher, I accidentally hit on a method that worked pretty good. Using a razor blade, make a single cut. Then SLOWLY tear the foam along the cut by pulling the two sides of the cut apart. This is still not as clean as from the factory. But a lot smoother than the other methods.
Of course, mark your cut lines before you start cutting. Measure TWICE to be sure.
If anyone has a better method, I'd sure like to know about it.
Thanks,
Tuckerdog1

Don't have a better method for trimming. I was wondering though what thickness ended up being best? I assume the 3IN. thick.

The best way I have found to cut it was using an electric carving knife, The same one you use for Thanksgiving Turkey. you just have to be careful to keep the knife vertical, or the edge won't be even.

3" is used in the stick house. It is the best of the three. 2" on the bed in the camper. The 1.5" is for the fold out bed in the camper ( should we have a guest ) The 1.5 rolls up & stores pretty easy.

Where did you source the toppers? Amazon? Recommended brand? We are looking and prefer a more plush (soft) feel. Thanks!!

Got one at Sam's Club, and the others off Amazon. I recommend reading the label carefully. Most newer one have some sort of gel that makes for better air circulation. Also, some ( like one I saw at Wal Mart ) will say it's memory foam. But the fine print shows 1/2 the thickness is memory foam and the other 1/2 is regular crappy foam.
If you're patient, the deals can be pretty good.

I've used an electric carving knife twice to trim or cut a memory foam mattress with remarkable success. Give it a try.

Started with a 1 1/2 foam, didn't make a big difference. Got a 3" memory foam from Costco. Measured, marked and used a long serrated edge bread knife. Not a factory smooth edge, but once you put a fitted sheet on it, who cares. Very Comfy! Then cut the old foam to fit the twin bunks.

My wife made seat cushions for the truck with the excess. Makes the long drives a lot better.

X2 electric knife. Did 2 and perfect. Like said, watch angle to get flat end. Or if you have a Wildcat that has the curved headboard you could angle it to fit the curve

gel/foam
Gel in foam mattresses does not "breath better. It doesn't breath at all. It just "feels cooler" Plain memory foam or gel mix, either is ok, since the prices are getting closer together, anyway.

I purchased our gel foam with a quilted fitted topper at Amazon with free shipping. No cutting. It was for King, not the regular size but the couple of inches smaller one. It cost over $100.00 BUT DH loves it. He is a picky sleeper.

I really can't see the problem. Everytime I have bought a topper, I bought it for the size of my mattress, i.e. queen for a queen and double for a double, and they have all fit perfectly. Never had to cut. All the topper were bought from Wally.

A wood cutting band saw will cut it clean.

When temperature is below 32°F, gel-foam mattress becomes hard as a wooden board. At this happends it is very easy to make a clean cut with an electric carving knife kept at right (90°) angle.

I used electric carving knife and put it on edge of a table to keep it straight and vertical.
